Planely speaking

I miss my old house and the old airport. Very badly. Especially since these days my daily route to work is so staid - flyover constructions :-P Earlier, I would always catch an aeroplane or two take-off / land and I'd watch it until the tiny blip flashes out of sight. Even trains fascinate me equally. Maybe it is due to my limited travel. For a long time my longest train journey was 8 hours ( Bangalore-Chennai ) in the evergreen Brindavan Express !!! I can assure you I've been seated in every window-seat on that train -- Okay, I'm not that old :-P  There's something about airports and railway stations that excites me instantly. The very prospect of traveling in a flight gives me an adrenaline rush.

My dad had a job that took him to nearly every city in India. Even before he got married, he had been to north-east-west India - everywhere! Lucky him. When we were kids , my dad ensured that we always got to see a new place every now and then. I will always remember my first flight. We flew to Trivandrum from Bangalore. After that, my memory's hazy and to this day I don't recall how we went to our native town and Kanyakumari. But the flight.. Oh wow! I was probably 9-10 years old. It was an early morning flight and the airport was just 10 minutes from my old house. My mom was up by 4 (or midnight I am not sure) and packing idlis (snack made with lentils & rice) for everyone!!! Old habits die hard. All my dad's repeated reassurances that food was most definitely provided in every flight fell on deaf ears. Thankfully we weren't forced to eat idlis. My brother was a naughty, chubby and very cute kid. While boarding the flight, at the sight of the pretty air-hostess with a tray full of toffees, my brother couldn't stop himself. He attacked the entire tray promptly ( Not the air-hostess silly - he was a kid remember )!!

Yet another time, many years later we went to New Delhi on a holiday. The flight from Bangalore to New Delhi was 3 hours long ; a dream come true for 'flight-maniac' moi ;-) The only disappointment here - My brother was in primary school still and he got a complimentary toy. Me - nothing !! Come on, I was only in 9th or 10th ( I think ) :-(   I love receiving and seeing off people at airports and railway stations. I can stand at airports for hours watching the flights, observing people and even admiring their luggage :-D To tell you the truth, I simply forget the people I am with and stand mesmerized noticing everything and everyone else. I sometimes even envy the security guards. One of my friends is an air-hostess and I never get tired of listening to all the airport stories she has to share. Oh yes, I love Arthur Hailey's Airport too :-)

My first flight abroad was eventful but not really fun though. I was least bothered about the purpose of my trip or the country, places to sight-see etc. Long aeroplane journey was the only thing buzzing in my mind. I didn't go directly from Bangalore. At Bangalore airport , my parents & brother saw me off. Flew to Chennai where I had to wait until midnight for my flight. At Chennai domestic airport, all my relatives came to receive me .. and then see me off. I will never forget the look on my teammates` faces when they saw the huge gang that welcomed me at the airport. They mumbled Hi's and were speechless for nearly two minutes. My grand-parents and cousins went overboard with their emotions and crushed, squeezed and hugged me the moment I stepped out of the domestic airport. No, it wasn't a re-union after years. We do meet pretty often - Chennai is like backyard for me actually. My uncle sensed the abnormality and made some small talk with them. My colleagues felt a tad out of place amidst my boisterous family and they told me they'd wait inside the International terminal while I said my goodbyes :-D Once they left, we clicked pictures. Correction. We did nothing but click pictures. Yeah, I have solo pics, family pics, pics with cousins, pics with my luggage - you name it !!  It has got to be my best 'airport' moment till date ;-)

Once inside the flight, all my excitement was short-lived. Mine was the last seat in the flight (right at the back) and my colleagues were ahead. I wasn't even beside the window. I promptly took the window seat and decided to beg the rightful owner of that seat when he/she arrived. It was a nightmare come true for me. A foreigner sauntered in and demanded his seat. I pleaded ( even smiled !! ) and gave him a pitiful glance. The 'wet blanket' refused to give in. If looks could kill, I would've ensured he dropped dead right then. I plonked myself on the aisle seat very grumpy.

Since I had nothing better to do ( TV was awful - some really really unheard of Tamizh movie ), I dozed off. This guy kept shooting stuff on his video camera ( probably his first flight or new gadget ), eating noisily & drinking most of the time. All this at midnight! Thrice I was woken up because his royal highness had to attend to nature's call or whatever !!!! I used to be woken up like this - with a poke on my shoulder. I mean, whatever happened to manners -- 'excuse-me', 'please', 'a moment' .. of course not.  Everytime he poked, I would scowl and grit my teeth. I'd stay awake because I knew he'd return but Heaven knows what he was upto. I would doze off eventually , tired of waiting , only to be poked again. Aaargghhh!! Far from a pleasant , enjoyable happy flight ! The third time I decided it was time for sweet revenge! I pretended to be fast asleep when he returned and all his incessant poking was ignored. I shifted in my seat and made him wait impatiently for 5-10 mins. I secretly hoped he would go back to the restroom and I could lock him in. Royal pain in the wrong place he was. I was so fed up of the poking that I scowled at the air-hostess too when she woke me up to serve me my meal.

At least my return journey was great. Again no window-seat but the guy beside me was every flight-lovers` dream come true. He willingly gave me his seat ( Ok I pleaded again but the pitiful glances were not necessary ) and we chatted a lot ( it was his first flight to Bangalore ). Turned out he was also working in the same place I did , albeit a very senior colleague. He thought I was a college student on a holiday. How I wish. Ha ha!!

My dream flight would be one that goes on and on alternately shuttling between nice spacious airports !! :-D  I definitely need a window-seat , preferably with a ton of books and junk food at my disposal. For company and entertainment, I'll settle for Johnny Depp after a lot of deliberation. I hope he's a good listener. I could go on and on but I think you got the point or didn't you ?! ;-)

I took this snap from the flight back to Bangalore .. and I'm so proud of it. If you get to see some of the atrocious snaps I generally click, you would also clap hard at this ;-)

After a long time.. Im the first one.. yayy.. AT least u should be treating me for this :P

And amazingly well written.. I love the way you make the readers think of the moment . I mean for eg.. ur brother fell on toffees not on the Air hostess" Remember he was a kid".. he he..

and the train and flight journeys. I guess i have most horrible train/bus/flight journeys in the old days when we did not have mobiles also..once my parent did not know where am i for like 36 hours .. my mom was 75 % dead when i reached back home :)
Not to forget i have the sweetest of them too :)
Loved the post .. From a genuine fan of ur writing .. :) whenever you write a book Ill be the first one to buy ur first copy .. :P

you could be my twin you know hehe.. I love watching trains and planes too :D

and about Johnny Depp as your flight companion, I would second that. sigh.. now am lost ..

and how on earth did you manage to sit next to that man who kept poking. such a prick.

last week I traveled to Delhi and concluded that Airport truly is the best set up to observe people. I had a nice time doing that (was forced to reach airport early and was left with no choice. of course had a book to keep me company).

As always loved reading this post! you go girl :)

My first flight was Bangalore - Chennai! I think i was fortunate to get a window seat without any pleadings ;) Most of the first thingy is a kinda hard to forget!

Yes, Window seat is something I like the most and most of the time, it comes without being asked :D be it my cab, train or even flights!!! Good stuff with no nonsense this time :)

Sooper blog...well captured.

I specially liked all our relatives at the airport scene. I can imagine the expressions on your colleagues face:-)

So glad that you don't write about bus journey / people snoring while travelling :-)

Enjoyed your venture very much, though often at your expense I fear. It is interesting about traveling companions that fate randomly plops in the seat next to us. I am so glad you had a good experience to counteract the bad one.
I apologize for the Ugly American jerk.

Hey girlie..sorry for not visiting your blog from a long time. Was out for a week on vacation, awayyy from work. Now back to work :( :( That's interesting since even I looooove travelling on train/planes. I hate buses though. Your first flight experience was funny, next to the poking guy..hehe. I dont remember mine though. Nice pics too. :) About your relatives part, I am sure your colleagues would have felt jealous at all the royal treatment you got :P :)
Will come back to read the previous post!!

sonal - Thaaaaannk you kindly :-))) That's way too sweet of you. Doubt I can write a book but blogposts will surely continue ;-) You were unreachable for 36 hrs?? I must listen to that story from you sometime. Treat for you? Anytime!! Simply demand!

Urmil Amol - Thank you so much :-) Yeah we do meet all kinds in the flight. One can never say! Too bad he didn't drop dead ;-)

Mindful Meanderer - Thanks a lot Shruti! :-) How very true.

Shruthi - Same pinch ;-) Sorry JD is mine! :-P As for sitting beside that guy, no choice really. I agree with you - Time passes at airports v v quickly. Thank U so much twin !!!!!! :-)))

Neo - thank u thank u !! :-) I always envied you - so many flight trips every yr!! Well, you're plain jealous noone came to see you off :-P

Mohan - How on earth do u manage that? Everytime I have to travel, my first worry is always the window-seat!!! 'Good stuff with no nonsense' - thanks! i'm finally getting there ;-)

evanescentthoughts - Yayy you're back!!! Bet you had tons of fun. Btw I don't like bus journey too much, especially if its for too long! As for my teammates, initially they were shocked, surprised.. then when it sunk in, probably jealous ;-) Heehee..

sm - happy you did.. thank you so much! :-)

Prepare for the worst and expect the best! isn't it simple? :-p
May be it is time to say touch wood :)

Samvedna said...

very well written...earlier I also wanted window seat, but now for long journeys I prefer aisle:)

Insignia said...

Your flight journey is so like me; hahahaha.

And the window seat; yeah but its not that great. You will be bundled; thought the aisle was always better.

Johnny Depp for company!!! I am sure he will keep you occupied. Would you really read books on flights? I have tried getting loads of books; but haven't felt like reading; with all those turbulence and flight sickness

Shilpa Garg said...

A very interesting narration and equally entertaining experiences!!
Railway Stations and Airports are exciting places throbbing with life. Wherever, your eyes take you, there is a new, interesting sight!
Ahh...the window seat, I wish sometimes that lil' Aaryan does not occupy the window seat everywhere! :p

SG said...

Nice post. You would very well fit into our family. I said in my latest blog that my family thinks if we do not go on a plane, it is not a vacation.

lostworld said...

Mohan - That's my motto too. touch wood touch all the wood !! ;-)

Antarman - Thank you so much! :-) I guess too many flight journeys does that to you..right?

Insignia - Oh I hate the aisle. I have to have a window :-D I have never read in flights until now since excitement overcomes all sickness actually ;-)

Shilpa Garg - thank u thank u thank u :-))) You said it! They are the most exciting places. Ah, your fight for the window seat is a lil complicated i'm afraid ;-)

SG - Thank U! I remember reading that. It was funny & yes, applies to me too. I have to add though 'great minds think alike' :-P

I too love airports and railway stations and I too can watch people for hours :-) I too loved Arthur hailey (Must have read when i was in college)

Yeah long International flights can be a nightmare if travelling companions are lousy :-)

Johnny Depp :-) I just made his portrait :-) I'd have settled for George Clooney or Salman Khan :-) hee hee..

Nice post!
Have been meaning to visit you for ages. Finally did :-)

Cheers and have a super-duper weekend.

For my sis & me, how good or bad a flight is depends on what movies we can watch & the quality of the food :D

Will be travelling soon for the first time with the baby....that'll be an experience!!! Hoping all goes well then.

I pray that I should not be travelling in a window seat beside you sleeping on the aisle seat; how terrible it would be to get the exit / entrance blocked with a sleeping beauty....just kidding.
Last week, during my short trip to India I was fascniated with the words on my boarding pass "Frequent Traveller", only to find myself sitting near to the stinking toilet...urghhh....it was a nightmare..
Funny read Rohita...:)

Thud! Thatz me landing on ur blog :P
LOL girl ... that family tale of urs .. ditto ditto on my side ;) People were wondering if I had achieved something really gr8 ;) But eh, blessed we r to hv such a lovely family na :)

That poker .. aaaah! Pain pain! I would have punched him on his nose when he was zzzZZZZZZZing ;)

lostworld said...

Preeti Shenoy - Warm welcome & thank you sooo much!!! I'm all smiles :-))) Your JDepp portrait was MINDBLOWING. I kept visiting your page to observe the lil details. Sigh. Have a fabulous weekend!! :-)

Shalom - Ah, movies & food-most airlines disappoint on those 2 accounts! Travelling with daughter? I bet observing her itself will be a mini-movie for you ;-) have fun.

Musings of a lonely traveler - sorry but that was quite funny! I thought frequent travelers enjoyed VIP treatment always. Pity! .. thank you very much :-)

Swaram - my family is well aware I'm no achiever, they just love to get-together (reason for celebration is always welcome) :-))
Punch the poker? Well I was poked solely because he was awake & I was asleep. Plus he was huge. Would've thrown me off the plane.

Vidya - Hey thank U very much! :-) Your plan for flights is all set I can see. I don't sleep either purely due to over excitement!

Maybe if I were travelling alone I'd enjoy my journeys more. Travelling with family, esp kids can be a nightmare...tho my kids are more dependable now. But frankly I love the vacations but dont really fancy the travelling to reach there bit of it;-P
And oh yes a bad travel companion spoils everything for u;-/

Loved the pic....very mystic!!!!
