Be a sport!

I am happy! I thought I live in a corner of Bangalore where fun quotient is negative (Its true to a large extent) but as they say - 'Every cloud has a silver lining'. There is a lot of open space around my apartment and recently a couple of folks living nearby have set up a make-shift Badminton court in one of the unused plots ( I assume this happened with the permission of the owner ;-) ) I'm all set to join in and enjoy my evenings -- Whatever remains of the evening by the time I reach. Anyway, I am certain weekends will be action packed for the already hyper-active me.

Throughout my school days, I used to play Badminton & Table-Tennis.  I did not pursue it actively during my college days. I don't really know why. The only plausible explanation I can come up with is that I had quite a bit of traveling to do in those days. But I know you're thinking 'Where there's a will there's always a way' ! ;-) Since I am on a roll with cliched sayings, let me add this for motivation as well - 'Better late than never' !!

In school # 4 ( I have studied in 5 schools ) , sports played a very important role. Would you believe if I told you that the boys used to be trained in Boxing here !!??! Nice way to arm them if you ask me. Ask a girl out, she refuses.. Box her ears !! :-D ( Nah I have no personal experiences! ) Not just that, they held annual marathons , hired excellent sports teachers and ensured everyone participated, by choice or force. They had a very annoying rule though. Sports classes/periods were always after school. Evenings 3 - 5 p.m. Twice or thrice a week. Their uniform was funny especially for boys. Too embarassing to reveal it here - Email me for details ;-) For girls, it was alright - skirt and shirt. Let me reveal something even funnier. Students were not allowed to wear their sports uniforms to school (like all other schools). Instead you had to carry it with you and change prior to the sports classes. Yuck. I used to HATE it. Imagine... I know you can't. Try !! School ends at 3. All girls rush to the changing rooms. Sports classes ends at 5. Again change and go home. Well I usually never changed back and went home directly. So much change in 1 day was beyond me and frankly I didn't care.

More often than not, in the lower classes, I'd forget to carry my 'Sports Kit'. Or worse, my shoes would be dirty because I would've forgotten to polish them. My mom is a stickler for rules and cleanliness. Since the classes were always in the evening, she would polish it and keep it ready (and clean). My school was 2 kms away from home.  I was glad when I changed schools though !! Even most of their other procedures in schooling were strange and non-conformist.

I loved the sports classes though. I played for inter-school, intra-school etc and I have fond memories of the winning moments. There are always hits and misses. That's what makes playing so much fun. In school # 5, I used to play Throw-ball too. I was abysmal to say the least. I couldn't  serve despite repeated sessions also. Didn't help my cause that I am not tall. Add to the fact that I was made the Captain. Ridiculous! I tried to reason with the sports-teacher that it didn't make sense. Thanks to the other girls, we managed a few respectable wins.

I have learnt several lessons as a sportsperson. I won't delve into preachy guidelines and sermons since I find them all sounding hollow :-) That its easy to let go of inhibitions nearly sums up all my learnings. I'm usually game for most things that life throws at me. Trying my hand at something new is my favourite hobby.

I don't sit glued to the TV and watch sporting events regularly. I used to religiously follow a few Tennis tournaments when in college. My current favourite sports-person would be Michael Phelps

Even today, the Badminton, Athletics and TT certificates I had won are so close to my heart. None of my academic 'achievements' can take their place. There is simply no comparison (in my eyes). I plan to play all my life :-)

Dudette... its is high time all of us to get into some kind of workout routine. All we idiots sitting infront of this box having an 'Intel' inside seriously needs some form of physical activity. One of my prev manager has been in this industry for about 15+ years and he had all kind of health issues as a result of no workout. Slip disc, obese, and what not! Finally he gave up on his job altogether.

Apart from my regular jog in the mornings, started playing rubiks cube at work at times for some excercise to fingers/hand as well as some food for brain.

Well, the schooldays were the golden days!!! 10+ kms of cycling everyday and then regular PT... still so much of fun. Miss those days.. Nostalgic :(

Your last sentence is perfect. Play keeps us young and we should never quit.
I competed in a lot of sports when younger, softball, volleyball, basketball and dabbled in tennis and golf. Love to play sports but am a poor competitor. Winning was OK but losing was OK also. No real drive to win here. I just enjoyed the games.
Badminton is such fun. I had forgotten about that.
Anything to keep us away from the glowing screens (TV and Computers) is a good thing.

I'm not at all an athletic person, but the one sport I have enjoyed nearly all my life is badminton. There is an excellent court in the building where I live, but I haven't been able to use it yet - post-delivery restrictions :(. Fortunately, my take-it-easy time is almost up & the one thing I'm dying to do is play badminton. Hopefully next week, I'll be able to hit the court!!!

I've never been sporty!
I HATE having to workout. I'm overweight and a couch potato!
Love the TV, internet and books, lots of books!
Somehow I was never the athletic types in school and I don't know why... Everyone took part in some or the other sport. I would love coming back home and not play after school! :(

Neo - That's good! No wonder I beat you even in board games ;-) My post on swimming exp. is called 'To Av..'.. and I think you read it dumbo!

Mohan - Wow, its nice to hear you keep fit! :-) I hear a lot of health-related problems affecting ppl today - worries me too. Usually its a lot of things put together - food habits, lifestyle, crazy working hrs, lack of sleep etc etc..

Insignia - I've never played baseball. Hey doesn't really matter whether one is good. As long as it makes you feel good .. right?

Arkansas Patti - Whoa.. Exactly which sport haven't you dabbled at?! ;-) So good to read your comment. I used to be a sore loser (sulk etc) but as you keep playing, one learns to accept or compete harder. Former was me I guess .. heehee :-D

Shilpa Garg - Thaaaankk You!!!!! :-) That's high praise. I'm happy! Hope I continue to do so.

Shalom - Must be bad having to gaze at the court & not be able to play. Gooood that your time to play is nearing. Have fun!!! :-)

sm - oh u did.. thanks!!! :-)

Shraddha - Hey you know I 'Googled' to find out what that means. So much funn!!!!! :-) Write about it smtime.

nivedithasperceptions - Maybe its because none of the sports played in school interested you?? I'm certain there would be something that appeals to you. In any case its also enjoyable if you have good company :-)

It was already too late when I realized that the extra pounds on me was due to my decision of giving up playing cricket, the only sport that I was actively involved in. Atleast, I removed the towels from the Tread Mill in the hall after reading your post...(he! he! I was using it only for drying towels).
Good read Rohita :)

Tell me about sports !!!.i just love them. When in school i used to just wait for the sports period.. i remebeer it used to be in afternoon everytime ( Plan from the school so that we don;t play much in the sun) .. But we.. he he.. proved them wrong .Obviously .. The next class teacjher literally had to come to the sports ground to call us back for the next class. ( Our sports ground was a little away from teh campus so we couldn;t hear the bells ringing)..
Not to show off :P.. but i was a athelete.. i have won so many races , long jumps, High jumps.. Awww.. the good old days.. :)..
It was so nice without bothering the white dress which we used to wear will go for a tosss and ma will kill me for making it so dirty .. now a days even i don't make my clothes dirty becuase i know i only will have to wash them ( Signs of aging. LOL).. he he

Urmil Amol - The only thing I read (again & again) was Karate!! Your husband must be quite scared of you ;-) My bro used to try his karate stunts on me. My defense used to be tears. Dancing? Wow. Cool! & thanks so much.

Musings of a lonely traveler - Thanks a lot!! :-) Heeeheee :-D A Treadmill for drying towels!! You must be rich..Pls to donate to paupers like us. Happy to hear that treadmill is no longer the clothes-line!
