From riches to rags ;-)

My first real job was a "business venture" with my neighbour PS when we were in school. We painstakingly made colourful and creative bookmarks sitting on our neighbours' car and sold them around our apartment for prices ranging from Rs. 2 - Rs. 15. We warned our parents that they might be the scape-goats lucky folks in case no one bought our priceless merchandise. We lived in a huge housing colony so no dearth of potential customers. Our bookmarks were sold out the same evening! Talk about demand. We celebrated by treating ourselves to the new Kwality Walls` Choc-o-Rock ice-cream and divided the remaining amount between us ;-) We shut shop as we had lofty ambitions after this success story!

My next
near-perfect-job was many years later and this one was part-time. My friend A got to know about this job from her friend. We were having semester break. It was a call-centre job or something like it in a commercial complex called 'House of Lords' !!! :-D We had to call and bore rich people about Mutual Funds. A was well-versed about mutual funds and the terminology but yours truly had no clue. I was just glad A was around for entertainment. Well, we got KT about the firm's plans and offerings from a chap one rainy evening. In between dozes, I got the hang of what we had to do. A was pumped up and she had chalked out a plan complete with how much money we would make and a humungous shopping list of must-haves :-) Alas. That chap never called us back (sob) & all our grandiose shopping plans went down the drain (rather A's, since I had decided to go with her plan). Many weeks later, one evening I got a call enquiring whether I'd be available to give the session (on mutual funds of course) to another person they had newly hired for the same call centre stuff. Since I had college, I declined. That's what I told him. Really, how could I confess I didn't remember anything :-D

The rest of the jobs as they say is all a blur. Campus placements, off-campus offers etc. Nothing out of the ordinary here. My first placement happened all because my T-shirt played a huge role in conveying a distorted impression of me. I was an IEEE Volunteer (Just clarifying) !!! All the questions revolved around IEEE. Another Technical interview for a different workplace was outright embarrassing. My cellphone ring tone in those days was a comical Chicken dance. I had conveniently forgotten to set the profile to Silent. Bang in the middle of the interview, the chicken dance tune echoed loudly in the room and I turned completely red. The Interviewer was supremely amused , couldn't control his broad smiles and told me to go ahead and attend to the chicken. Sheeesh !!! In case you're wondering whether I got hired, as cliched as it may sound, that's for me to know and you to guess ;-)

More stories about the corporate world and my bitter sweet experiences is for a later day when I am someplace far away !! Adios amigos.

Interviewers must have got bowled for that IEEE stuff... I am damn sure, very few have IEEE subscription in corporate world. Given the impression that you were an IEEE volunteer, they had better plans of knowing more from you to improve their knowledge!

Now coming to the chicken dance part... did the chicken help you out? it is unfair to leave it to us for guessing. My guess is that it chicken trick should have clicked, reason - that bought a *broad smile* on the interviewers face!

Thats a nice and different subject for the post :) and again very well written and described....when u said u were called to give overview session i had started making plans to enlighten myself as well but the planning was washed away with the next line itself...the chicken dance stuff was amazing...good that the interviewer had a sense of humour, else some interiewers are hell bent to make u feel that u should have been the part of dumb and dumber :)

something tells me you got placed despite the ringtone :D
certain interview sessions are unforgettable isn't it.. embarrasing but nevertheless memorable :)
and your first business venture sure was a success. you should have carried on the tradition ;)

Hilarious chicken dance moments!! hei I've never attended interviews in person, as all of my 2 interviews were telephonic. Not so, the interviewers would have noticed the thin stream of sweat running along my face..hehe! good read amiga...:)

Well since it is important to stand out from all the other applicants, I'm guessing the chicken dance did that for you and you were hired.

Mohan - I was prepared for C,C++ usual programming stuff, when all I was asked was IEEE related Q's for 10 mins. Then interview over ;-) Chicken dance..well..You might be right ;-)

Urmil - Thank YOU!!!!! :-)Hehe... You're so right about the interviewer's sense of humour. I was quite sure I would be lectured on etiquette etc but luckily he was a nice guy.

Shruthi - Oh yes, I simply cannot forget that interview. I even took ages to finally switch off the phone 'cos I was so embarrased. I also wish I'd never shut the bookmark shop ;-)

thethoughtfultrain - Welcome to my blog!!! :-) I agree with you, hence the title you see.

Musings of a lonely traveler - Oh new pic? Well, telephonic ones are scarier, at least for me. I prefer f2f. Thanks so much :-)

Swaram - Ah well, go to Google or 'House of Lords' ;-)

Arkansas Patti - Yippee you're back. That's a perfectly logical deduction ;-)

Vineeta - Thanks I was able to access your blog now. Suppose it was a temporary glitch. Did you have any such interview experiences? You should've heard the ringtone. I wish my current phone had it ;-)

sm - :-)

I have to give some of them now.. :((( they are such a pain but now after working for like 4-5 places, I am no more scared of interviews.. but I remember my first interview in which I cudnt answer anything coz I was scared and this interviewer gave me a lecture that I should not get tensed etc. ofcourse, I dint get the job :) I would call this post a "beautiful and interesting post" girlie :) :)

Engineering at bangalore and you will see funny, disastrous, crazy... All kinds of interviews! :D

And the bookmark job... Awesome! :)
Even I would come up with such things when I was a kid, they were all inspired from TV shows! :D Mine were never successful though! And I wonder why my life's not like that anymore! :(

Anonymous said...

lol...good one...you started early!!

lostworld said...

nivedithasperceptions - You're right! Although I haven't given too many interviews, the few I gave were all radically different from one another.
Thanks!!! Bookmark selling success was a fluke. I wish I'd continued on similar lines ;-) Welcome to my page fellow-Bangalorean!

Shraddha - I know!!! It was a good start too :-) thanks!
