Ever since Bangalore Central opened their new branch in Jayanagar 9th Block, I was looking for excuses to shop. I 'desparately' need a black T-shirt or black jeans or green shirt. I love their main store too because its the only place in Bangalore where I always get what I want. I am not a compulsive shopper or window-shopper. I shop (for clothes) only when I really really need something. The moment I find what I am looking for, I don't like to linger even for a second longer. I recently shopped in Bangalore Central (got all the above things I 'badly' needed) and I did a study of the shoppers there...ok, jeez kidding, I billed my clothes and ran home :-)
I don't know what goes on in men's shopping zones and so do not want to venture into unfamiliar territory (Ok I know a little, but I'll get to it later). All my friends (guys) tell me they are quick shoppers but with the girls, I know the never-ending saga. All too familiar wonly!
Gang of girls : I have been a part of this needless to mention. I've shopped with all my friends at some point or the other, but one of them sticks out prominently. My closest friend A is a living example of a mall-rat! She has the patience of a donkey coupled with the keen interest & inquisitiveness of a little child when it comes to shopping. We have spent days loitering in and out of malls, walking up and down commercial street and when all else fails, even national market together! I can be a nice friend in case it didn't strike you yet. There are a few fringe benefits - When she tries on something that catches my attention, I don't hesitate to pick it up myself. We have the same capris, same jacket and umm.. have I missed anything else A? She's now in California , still a shopaholic, spoilt for choices with the innumerable malls, but A, I can bet you won't find another friend like me? ;-)
I have another friend who is a compulsive shopaholic - she looks for excuses to shop. Everytime I talk to her, she has 4 new t-shirts or 2 kurtas or a night-dress even. Yeah S, I'm talking about you - 'Exam was ok so I rewarded myself by shopping!' :-O Is there a cure for her? I'm convinced it is a disease.

With my Mother : Ha! Thank heavens my mother doesn't blog for if she did, she'd dish out a zillion posts about her hair-raising traumatic experiences with me. When I was in school and college, I hated everything in every shop we went to. Just like now, I'd have a fixed pattern and colour in mind and wouldn't budge to settle for second-bests. My mom used to be stark raving mad by the end of these shopping trips and would beg me to go with dad next-time around! Nothing much has changed over the years. A minute improvement - I learnt to explain exactly what I am looking for to the attendants, however stupid I sound. The only positive part is that I surprisingly love 99% of anything my mom buys for me. The catch is she has to buy it without me around.
With my Dad : My dad loves to shop for anything from CPU, Mobiles, DVDs to Tools! We are poles apart when it comes to shopping. My dad would do extensive research , go to a dozen shops , talk to two dozen people , think about it for two more weeks and then finally arrive at a calculated decision. I honestly find this trait of my dad extremely endearing but it was far from cute when my dad bought me my first cellphone. It was after so much research that he could've submitted a thesis on phones! Last year when we went to buy jewellery, I (as usual) had decided I wanted something tiny and in emerald green. I don't like gold jewellery all that much. I took a look at my options, narrowed it down to 3, tried them on and zeroed in on one set in 15 minutes. My dad was alarmed and couldn't imagine spending such less time on something that cost such a lot!! My mom was looking at me with thinly veiled disgust!! I escaped to the crafts store nearby.
With my Brother : My brother also.. hold your breath..loooves to shop!! I often wonder whether these people are truly related to me. Last Jan, I offered to take my brother out on his birthday and buy him a bunch of gifts. My brother wanted t-shirts. He only wears branded t-shirts these days (he's the ultra-cool and happening dude, totally unlike his dud sistah) . He has 5 black, 5 dark blue and 5 white t-shirts- all plain mind you! If you took a magnifying glass and checked the 15 T-shirts carefully , you'd see a Nike , Adidas or Puma logo somewhere in a corner! First shop we entered was Adidas - I found a black sweater I'd always been looking for. Brother didn't find anything. Since my brother knew what a tough customer I usually was, he urged me to buy it and threw in some compliments. Second shop was Reebok - I found 2 t-shirts that were calling out to me. Brother - nothing called out to him. Third shop (Shoppers Stop) - I found a pair of sandals and nearly bought it when my brother got all irritated and dragged me home. Since I usually don't find what I want that easily , I told my brother what a lucky charm he turned out to be. He looked daggers at me but the whole episode was too funny!
How can one forget the ubiquitous trial rooms - such an essential part of shopping trips. Its partly the reason why I hate frequent shopping trips. Some common scenes --
****** Out comes a girl from the trial room and orders her friend - "Go get Medium, Small isn't fitting" and so on. Until the Medium comes along, she waits..and waits and keeps the queue outside waiting too!
****** My mom - she'd be in another corner of the shop when I go in to try on clothes. I'd have to scan the entire shop , listen to her oft-repeated comment ( "This is too tight c! Take Large" !!! I don't wear 'tight' clothes by any stretch of imagination; to my mom, anything that is comfort fit is figure-hugging tight ) , convince her that I don't want to be swimming in a gunny bag and finally return to find out that all the trial rooms would be occupied.
****** Have you observed there are a few guys sometimes waiting outside these trial rooms (for their girlfriends of course). They have the maximum fun. It is a fashion parade for them! I mean, must they stand right outside the trial rooms and stare at everyone? I have half a mind to quip - 'Muft ka entertainment kya? Hato yahaan se! ' ( Free entertainment is it ?? Move it man ! ).

****** There's a mysterious category too - 2 or more people get inside 1 trial room. OK, I'm going to put it down to time-saving tactics. It is imprudent to list out my thoughts (and yours!) here.
As far as guys are concerned, one close college friend of mine N loves to shop. He once dragged a few of us to as many as a dozen shops before he decided on a watch. By then, I couldn't tell one watch from another and I started praying to all the Gods I knew to help him find that elusive wrist-watch. Haven't met any other like him though. So I think most guys tend to shop faster as I've never seen snake-like queues outside trial rooms in the men's section. Have you?
I can write a whole book on shopping (see I never mentioned sarees or shoes yet) but if I cover everything now, I'm going to run out of topics pretty quickly and leave my blog dry. All I can say for now is - never ask me for fashion tips !! :-)

I envy your writing skills ;-)
lol! That was such a fun read! Shopping, all of us have such tales. don't we :) Do get your mom to blog - I would love to hear her version :)
Very hilarious reading. Loved it.
Have you seen the movie "Confessions of a Shopaholic" starring Isla Fisher. You will like it.
For some reason, I am reminded of this joke. A guy applied for a salesman job at Victoria's Secret. He told the interviewer that he was interested to meet beautiful girls like the ones shown in their catalog. The manager replied: Young man, that is advertising. The real people who shop here looks like your mother.
Very funny indeed!!!!
My mom is also like your mom. If a dress is the right fit, she tells me its tight. Our dress sense never match. :)
Very very observant you are!! I loved the guys waiting for girl friends outside trial room. Its just exactly opposite with me. I can shop in a jiffy. My husband takes hours to decide on a shirt!! And its embarrassing for a lady to be in men's section loitering around. Its as if I have come to steal some views :-|
Aiyoda! I told you we are twins! I am not a shopping person either.. :D
and this post is hilarious!
I always find atleast one mysterious trial room with more than 1 person in it. beats me!
btw me finished doing the tag. do hop in to read :)
hilarious post !! ...
Can relate to most of it ! was recalling the long queues in front of change rooms in central. during the sales season there were these make shift trial rooms which would shake when people inside moved.
And you are wrong about "never ask me for fashion tip" .. I remember the best dressed female on German streets getting all the attention !
quite a fun read, and I was surprised that you bro sounds so much like my son and you my daughter..looks like all families are same or what?..my son is so fond of shopping and wears only certan brands, whereas my daughter she will spend all her time in crafts:)
Ha ha Ha.. i can;t believe u read a post on SHOPOLOGY .. that is my area.. he he ..

ultimate yaar...your shopping skills with your bro is the best....Loved it...
I cannot shop at all apart from groceries and veggies....Need to ask my sister for new entries and fashions....But anyway Aryan is teaching me to do shopping now....
Aryan's Mom
Great fun post with lazar insights. You have nailed many people I know.
I'm pretty much like you. I have a set idea of what I want and will seldom settle for less. Frustrating.
Ohhh ro! See am here :P
A *Hifi* to you! U were right about the selection of dresses by mom. If my mom gets me something i would love, infact adore it. But if she selects something in my presence I will see the racks :P
And again a hifi for the gold thing! Unlike my sissie, I take plain, light, thin gold jewels which makes my mom go wild :P
Am envying ur writing skills too :)
very funny
I love shopping in Bangalore!!!
Shobha, thankyousoverymuchdear!!!;-)
Smitha, Nahiii..I'm not giving my mom ideas!! It would be like 'apne pairon pe khuladi maarna';-)
SG, thanks! I have read the book'Confessions of a Shopaholic' and subsequent books (after shopaholic got married etc) by same author. Its truly funny!! Your joke was good-Advertising gimmicks and the effect it has on ppl..haha!!;-D
Tan, :-) our tastes (mom's & mine) usually are very similar. I pick sarees for her!
Insignia, 'steal some views' .. hahaha!! Amazing both of you and yes, embarrassing!! I hope the other guys don't find you intimidating!!!;-)
Shruthi, thanks..these days the mysterious trial rooms are growing in number. wonder what's with them! Patience isn't really a virtue these days;-)
Neo, think I got noticed as I was fully clothed in German summer in stark contrast to the locals.
Antarman, I never thought there would be another like my bro!!:-D It does look like our families share common traits...that's so nice!!
// OK, I'm going to put it down to time-saving tactics. It is imprudent to list out my thoughts (and yours!) here./
ROTFL :D :D ipdi oru open statement poatu pattaya kelapiteenga :D :D
/ I don't wear 'tight' clothes by any stretch of imagination; to my mom, anything that is comfort fit is figure-hugging tight ) , /
i think all moms are like "vaanatha pola" vijay kanth..v r always complan boys n gals for them ;) cant help it :D
i like shopping :) be it window shopping or the actual one..i feel all the malls are so full of positive energy and dreams and.. yeah.. lot of "wish i cud buy that" sighs too :))
i always form a design/color/pattern in my mind and i go hunting after that. like ur dad i check umpteen shops for all options before sticking on to something :D but no compromise on wat i want. once i was so addicted to white color that i wanted a plain "RIN WHITE" sort of full sleeve shirt. i checked arnd all the possible brands and non brands and for 2 years i cudnt get merawala white :D atlast i found it on a roadside shop near churchgate :D
ahchucho...egapatta kaments potuten!!! :D be it books dress shoes i shopping like :D and u knw wat..most of my sis dress i buy for her :D till now no complaints :)
I don't spend much time shopping for things. I get my things with in 5-10 mts. Shopping drains me. I really admire people who spend whole day in shops .
sonal, yay Ms. shopaholic, thaaank U!! I laughed hard when I read the comment about my bro. I'm going to make him read it;-) I still don't understand how chappals became a fashion statement, kids these days!!;-D Haha, he's gonna kill me or throw the chappals at me:-)
Swaram, I used that super cute phone till it died (after 3 yrs nearly) and Nokia had phased out all parts for that model:-(
Vineeta, thaaaank you!!!! Husband posts will be written once husband is present. Everyone I like/love merits an 'endearing' mention in this blog!;-D
Aryan's mom, I have noticed sisters have a lot of fun shopping together. Aryan shops for you-what a cool kid!!!:-)
Arkansas Patti, :-) Totally frustrating..I wholly agree.
Shruthi, yippee, someone decided to make a grand entry:-) whoaa.. yes we do have a lot in common. I like jewellery which isn't really seen and yet is seen..sigh! Think I should wear 'The Ring' (LOTR).
sm, :)
Agnes, compared to other Indian cities, Bangalore scores high when it comes to shopping!:)
Hahaha.... very very nicely written! :)
Every 2nd girl (in B'lore especially) are shopping freaks!
gils, naa nenakarein ungloda interpretaion of my statement is konjum different!!!;-) Hahaha..Neenge dhaan unglode comments-ode dhool kalapitinge. 'vanatha-pole' VK..Your shopping tendencies are quite like my dad's. Amazing - you shop for your sis - goesto show you have good taste!!:-)
chitra, oh yeah me too - I admire them when I'm not with them though;-)
$$, thaaank u. You're right. No wonder the malls are always overflowing with ppl.
I attempted a few times to accompany my cousin to Victoria's Secret. She never obliged :(
For us Indians, tourism is shopping, shopping and more shopping. Coz, I guess, we were never exposed to real holidaying.
loved it yaar..
i like you...you are my kinda girl...
i absolutely adore the mural that you have made...awsome...
Aha! Lovely choice of topic!!! :)
Unlike you, I never have a clear picture of what I want. I will scour all the malls, and buy stuff that catches my fancy!
Ps: Grrr..Have been in retail and my hatred? People who have a clear picture of what they want and refuse to listen to professional reason! :D
TC
Haha that was a fantastic narration, enjoyed reading it!
up take, welcome to my page!!:) Your cousin didn't oblige for obvious reasons. Sorry but I don't quite agree that Indians equate tourism with just shopping..The way I see it, in any tourist spot, there would be smthing unique/area special souvenirs to be collected. In India alone, since we are too diverse the options are more. Holidaying I agree has a different meaning in India compared to other countries :)
shraddha, thank u thank u and thaaaank u !!!!:-)
Choco, my eyes popped out when I saw your comment. Great to see you back!! Aha, ppl who refuse to listen to professional reason-that would most certainly describe me:)thank you!!!
ARUNA, welcome & thank you!
I never shop with my mom... :P i usually shop with my sister... and brother!!! no never... i would better buy him something of my choice than his... but won't go shopping with him :P
that was a lovely post gal :)
Laughed all the while reading !!! LOL
Such shopping experiences !!!
Those trial rooms are quite irritating - the queues especially !!!
Hahaha. That was so funny gal :) I am just like you. I have a mental picture of what I am looking for and once I find it, I buy immediately. No second thoughts. But I usually dont like the clothes my mom buys for me. I like buying my own stuff :) I love shopping for CDs n books. Can spend hrs looking at them :)
Rajlakshmi, thank you!!:-) I can tell your shopping problems begin with your companion itself..heehee. As long as you get what you want, its all ok!
umsreflections, welcome to my blog!!:-)) Trial rooms give me a headache too.
evanescentthoughts, that's great, so we can surely go shopping together. I like spending time in bookstores too:-)
Hilarious post....u really have the knack of transforming observations into words beautifully...
i as well hate the trial part...now u know why the same word is used for trying clothes and trying a criminal :)
Urmil, you nailed it!!Just the thing I would compare it to!!!;-D Now I know why it is such an ordeal. Thank You!!!
Loved your post..very hilarious..your narration skills are excellent :-)
maverickshree, :-))thank you so much!!!!
Easy read. In fact, most of your nostalgic posts are hilarious and entertaining :) Good use of GOOG storage and bandwidth.
Keep going.
true, true, true...:) Taking girls out for chopping enhances patience though...!!! :) but its fun...:)
Anonymous, I wouldn't have thought of the bandwidth & storage in a 100 years. Thank you so much !! :-)
Rubin, patience is a virtue they say. btw i hope you wrote chopping by mistake ;-) welcome to my blog!!
