Digest this

I reached home on a friday evening and got a red carpet reception from my neighbours and their school-going grandson M. I raised my eyebrows very suspiciously and my mom had this deja-vu look on her face. M had a science exhibition in school and wanted my help to do some drawings. M's grand-dad showers me with compliments "Akka does drawings (pointing to one painting of mine) so this is nothing for her".  I smelt something fishy of course. The bombshell was then surreptitiously dropped. The kid mumbled that he wanted me to draw "Digestive System" !!! It was like a bad childhood memory for me. I have never liked Biology and now I had gotten myself into this - I couldn't refuse because of the million 'please akka's' repeated to me :-(

I was half tempted to ask uncle - 'so, should I do a Tanjore style and stick stones in the Pancreas or would you like me to paint it on a pot (pot belly you see)' ;-P His weekend project taken care of, the kid ran away. Literally. I told M I would draw it for him and offered to teach him to paint it so that he also felt he contributed to it.  Turned out he was extra-smart (and extra-lazy). I forgot to mention this initially - M studied in Mysore. Imagine. So this uncle has told him that there is this bakra girl who would draw and he came happily to ajji-mane (grandmom's house) to enjoy the weekend! When I suggested that we do the painting together, he sheepishly tells me that he was going to Puttaparthi  the following morning & returning 2 days later. So his master-plan was to collect the completed project from me and leave for Mysore. I nearly fainted !!!! School-kid outsourcing work to me !!!! This is called asli bakra banana*. I was indignant now, but ... Some more emotional pleas and I relented.

I had the diagram ready by Sunday evening but I was too busy and couldn't paint it. He thanked me and said he would paint it himself. I looked doubtful. Out came the truth. He would make his mother do it. Boys I tell you. M was just like my brother. I did all sorts of projects for my brother - Circus Tent , Taj Mahal, blah-blah.

Few weeks later

My mom was talking to someone on the phone who was complaining of stomach-ache. The caller was describing exactly where the pain was to my mother , who suddenly became the human body expert. They were turning the insides of my stomach with their vivid descriptions, at least my mom's which I could unfortunately hear - 'where? right of stomach?' , 'that must be your appendix' , 'wait wait, maybe its kidney stone'.. and so on and so forth! Then suddenly my mom says ' hold on for a second, let me ask c -exactly where is the appendix ;  she drew the digestive system for a kid recently' !!!!

Me (angrily) , 'Amma, I knew where the appendix is even before that 'hot assignment' came my way' !!

This is why I often say - Family members! Their way of appreciating me is by saying the right/wrong things at the wrong/right times ;-D

Majja madi!!

* akka - elder sister in Tamil  //  *amma - mom in Tamil // * asli bakra banana - scape-goat in Hindi // *majja madi - have fun in Kannada  (wow..I  yam a true linguist. wink)

ROFL @ ur mom's statement, that u know the parts becos u drew the digestive system !!!

These kids, na, are quite lazy !!! While my elder one is quite serious and never outsources work, my younger one calls everyone for everything. And we'll all be doing her project, while she'll be rolling on the bed, reading a story book. The best part is when she comes and supervises the work we had finished and gives ideas. ;)

But, I am making sure that she does all her projects from this year. Enuf of outsourcing. ;)

Ha ha Ro, I hv been a bali ka bakra many times too .. my cousins and those cute neighbour kids hv used me properly :P

I hd once done a digestive system too for my cousin and she took it home offering to the painting. Wonder y, she started painting the stomach far beyond its starting point and it ended up where the lungs actually find their place :P :P
All effort gone down the drain :( We hd to do another one the next day after she was bk from school ;)

Pot painting sounds super cute ;)
Good one Ro :)

Pot belly hahahahah.. :D
kids can be mean; they have fun while you do their work. ahem..i used to outsource all my drawings to my sister. except amoeba. I could manage that ;)

VERY funny! :-D

Arkansas Patti said...

I'd have helped him but not done it for him. I do hope you got a good grade.
Very funny that drawing the digestive system qualified you to diagnose illness.

Insignia said...

Hahahaha....Hope you never are approached next time to draw urinary system :-P

I have long forgotten those complicated biology drawings...Phew!! What patience we had!!

Kids these days are really smart , they make the mom ,dad , uncles aunts all go through their lessons.I am surprised to see the way the bakras and bakris fall for this.

PNA said...

Wow! what a kid and what plans! Is this smartness, it is one thing to ask someone's help to do a project and another thing to almost hire someone to do it! Such skills at childhood! God save that guy from others

and what a grandfather?

Lol! at ur mother's comment

PNA said...

a teeny weeny mistake; save others from that little brat of a boy!

Very smart child!:D
I know the feeling, I have experienced these kind of projects many a time...including updating CVs, making powerpoint presentations or even writing speech for a program, among others!!
Once, I was told with great urgency to update a CV and was repeatedly told (pestered) to do it by 'that' time.
Despite, hard pressed for time, I did it by the GIVEN time!! And next day, when I asked for the feedback, I get a nonchalant reply, "Oh, I haven't checked it yet!"
Grr....

So I am with you! :)

umsreflections, supervising & giving ideas sounds just like my brother:) Instead of reading story books, he'd be out playing while we are toiling!!

Samvedna, haha..thank you!!:) nice name.

Bhagyashree, thank you so much & a warm welcome:)

gils, for a minute I thought you called me 'kiddo'!:-p My brother did all the bullying himself (wasn't even needed actually I was always easy to convince):-(

Vineeta, I shall tell mom & pass on a few from my side;)

Sraboney, I understand:)

Swaram, thanks !! heee.. that story made me laugh :D Can imagine your irritation. As if doing once isn't bad enough. I didn't bother to ask this kid what happened. Honestly I didn't care :)

Shruthi, :-) Somehow I knew that! All younger ones are the same. Cannot do anything without the blessings & efforts of us elder ones;-)hehe..

Swaram said...

Yay! I agree too ... elder ones r angels :P

lostworld said...

Agnes, :-)

Arkansas Patti, You mean the kid got a good grade? I never bothered to find out. My job ended with drawing. All else forgotten like a bad dream ;-D

Insignia, thank God kids don't read blogs yet for he might be tempted to make me do all the "systems". No more ideas such as Urinary etc Insignia else I'll be after your throat!! :-)

chitra, bakra toh I am. yes kids are super smart!! Shudder!

PNA, welcome to my blog:) That kid is certainly gonna make a future project manager of one of these IT firms, mark my words;-D thank you!!

MindfulMeanderer, :-)Thank you Shruti-I feel less of a bakra after reading your comment.

maverickshree, welcome here:) Thank you .. and you have an interesting name.

Shilpa Garg, Et tu?! Uff..that is totally annoying and disrespectful. I didn't even ask the grandfather or M what became of it. Remember that famous line Rhett Butler says "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn"!!:-)) Best policy.

Avada Kedavra said...

hahaha. that was cute :)That kid is very clever huh :) Yeah these kids sometimes do make us work for them. I have done many essays, assignments for my cousin too :) But I have done some voluntarily even before he pleaded me. Guess I love him a lot then :) your mom is super cute.hehe

:D :D i wont believe this till we get to meet him..somehow i guess u must've been the terror :D

I didn't know where appendix is located but right now I have a browser window opened with a neat diagram of alimentary canal. Actually a friend was explaining the other day that the appendix helps the useful bacteria to hang on (and not be entirely massacred) in case of a stomach virus.
Oh, I almost forgot to tell you how much I enjoyed your delicate homour.

sonal said...

Ha ha ha.. Thank god.. i was never good at drawing and no body ever came to me for the drawings :) .. I really had a hard time drawing the diagrams for practicals.. whether it circuits or biology ones :P
very well connected .. ur mom is so cute.. I wish i could just capture ur expression when she asked u that :D

Reflections said...

LOL....just too good;-D. Heights was when u found out the kid already made plans to do all the sight-seeing...hehahahaha;-D

lostworld said...

Swaram, lets laugh at Shruthi when we meet her & pretend we have a nice angelic halo over our head ;-D

evanescentthoughts, I felt the same when it came to my brother but I don't know how I allowed myself to be tricked into this..ok I know;-)

gils, who's the terror again?!!? what unfounded accusations! I'm gonna sue you for slander mister..watch it!:-D

uptake, My next post will be a quiz on all the various parts & their functions;-) Thanks for the info - I always thought appendix was largely unnecessary.I never imagined my post would have this effect on anyone. Thank You so much for making me laugh!!!!:-))

sonal, haha..I hope for your sake you aren't asked to draw stuff even later on. My mom gets away with being called cute et al no matter what she does;-D

Reflections, tell me about it! I kept imagining the kid having the last laugh while I was busy slogging over the shape of the liver!:-p Hmph.

Dhanya said...

Lol @ your mom's phone convo... :D :D Sounds like something my mom would boast of ;)

Sriram said...

very funny!

I used to outsource most of the Biology drawings to my cousin-sis. But I used to sit with her and watch her draw. Kids these days!

gils said...

Nice one. After reading your post, I was reminded of the sentence often used by the famous 19th Century showman, P.T. Barnum. "There's a sucker born every minute".

@Lostworld, Thanks so much for letting me know about your drawing skills... I will give your reference to my son...especially when he needs help with "Bialagy" drawings ;)

Dhanya, welcome!! :-D

Sriram, So you did all the cheering from the side-lines. That's the next best thing isn't it:)

Swati, welcome here.. :-)

SG, That's a diplomatic way of telling me to go hide in some unknown dark dingy corner of the world..thanks, I owe you one!;-p

Vidya, once bitten twice shy! No more bialagy or zoalagy drawings for anyone ;-D

ROFL! School project outsourced-for free! You got scammed by a kid! LOL :))

And yes. Parents have a knack of embarrassing their kid even when they are attempting to praise them. It seems to be their core job objective! :)

Shruthi said...

ushooo conspiracy going on! my loulies, the thing is, younger ones are smarter whatodooo :D

Pink Mango Tree said...

Oh Wow... Hilarious!!! :)
I loved ur mom's reasoning the most!

The moral of the story is - you draw various parts of the body to become a doctor! :)

lostworld said...

Choco, Don't laugh too much. Ek din mera bhi number aayega;) Core job objective is bang-on :D Its almost as if all parents come wired with it.Heehee..

Shruthi, entha smartuu? adelaa neevae haelbeku ;-p

SS, :-)) Isn't it so simple!! Henceforth start addressing me as Dr. I have my lab coats which I can re-use as doctor coats;-)

i can imagine ur surprize at how conviniently ppl take others for granted and they knowingly or unknowingly also inculcate the same attitude in their kids by allowing such behaviour, which is very sad....like the way ur mum trusts your knowledge on the subjects u might just touch upon...he he...thats what make mums so lovable :)

lostworld said...

Urmil Amol, Yeah exactly my thoughts..In case parents/kids cannot do projects , they must refuse outright. Well, even if they don't, next time I surely will :-))
