While Bangalore is recording highest summer temperatures in 25 years , I have recorded my fastest painting this year (ever actually). I started this mural in Feb and finished it by mid-March. Even for the simplest of paintings, I take my own sweet time ranging from 2-4 months on an average. Definitely a record of sorts!
I figured it may be a good idea to share how murals are done (for those interested of course)
1. Start with a small & colourful picture. Canvas boards are available anywhere.
2. Draw your picture.
3. To get an uplifting image, I used M-Seal (yeah the one used to fix leaky taps) everywhere except the faces, hands & legs. You can use clay too. If it seems too cumbersome, simply paint & omit M-seal/clay. It won't really matter as it is used to enhance the painting (a la cosmetics).
4. M-seal (if used) has to be rolled evenly and stuck with fevicol.
5. Paint with fevicryl colours.
6. Apply varnish evenly (1 coat) and you're done!
It isn't as complex I can assure you. If you are used to dabbling with colours, you can try this yourself. If you are not, then it is better to take classes. Not because it is difficult, but only because you wouldn't know to correct your mistakes. That's the most important thing I have learnt when I went for classes. Shading, painting, tapping et al you would be able to manage fine. Its when you botch up the painting that you are put to test. I have done camels and goats that looked like dogs always and well, ummm ... they still do ;-)
I'm done with large paintings for this year. I literally put my 'sweat & toil' into this one. Fevicryl paints dry in seconds and there is a lot of shading work to do, so I couldn't work with the fan switched ON. I regretted doing this in summer. Thankfully there are not too many mosquitoes where I live. Had they been there, I'm sure my board would've had a few dead ones here and there!! Whether you like my painting or not, don't leave this page without a mention about my windows. I had to take measurements & fit in equal number of grills in each window. First in pencil, then paint. Needless to say, by the time I completed one window I was ready to do 8 more ladies in place of the remaining 3 windows. Observe closely and you will notice varying thickness of the window grills - signs of my impatience. I know I will never get a job as a civil engineer or interior designer :-)
I plan to do more of phool-pata (landscapes) for the rest of this year. I have done 2 but I want to be able to paint just about anything that is front of me someday. It is my view that talent such as this is inborn in a lucky few. In my case however, it is just an interest that I developed over the years. Hopefully, I will continue to do so.

I came across this quote I liked; I can't give due credits to the author as it was anonymous.

And Yes I've asked you abt the Murals enormous times so the post was not a amazing one for me. ( I already got amazed by the M seal concept long back)
Needles to stay the painting is amazingly beautiful.. Keep up girl :)
WoW! seriously WOW! you are amazing.. loved the painting. its beautiful. those windows must have taken a lot of your energy I'm sure. and M-seal? awesomeness :)
Look around and check if there is an earnest student that you can tutor on this -- you will agree that will be highly satisfying and will automatically promote you to a Guru (Guruni..? Gurini..?). If you find one, blog about it. I know it is not easy to find one.
Wow! Wow!!! WOW!!!!!!
Beautiful!
p/s: WOOWWW!
Wow... So nice :)
I have always wanted to learn such things :( ... but then it never happened :) ... Hope I will one day :)
WOW!!!! Simply Awesome..... Really loved this.... Why don't you start an exhibition of your paintings and murals??? You will surely reach somewhere in this...
I reaaly admire your patience.... I am not at all patient enough to do this.
Nice work :) yes patience is a must...my mom recalls the days when girls were asked to stich and embroider, God! we'd scream...
I used cotton dipped in fevicol once, gave great results..try it :)
OHHHHHH my goodness! You paint beautifully!! That is a very very nice scene and you have explained how it's done very interestingly! :))) Loved seeing ur work!!!

Really neat work. I just wish the photo was a lill more larger for a better view. and the windows are beautifully done. Patience must be your middle name ! :D :D :D
and apart from the paints, you also put sweat and toil into this??? wow, never knew they could be used as substitute for paints !! :D :D :D :D :D
jokes apart, wonderful art !
what a peice of art this is!!!even if u hadn't ask for a mention of windows , m sure eveyone would hv mentioned it by default...cause that seems to be the highlight of the painiting...and the m-seal effect is awesome...the shading really gives a realistic feel to the painting as well...its truely beautiful....u r such a talented artist...all the best for your botany paintings :)
sonal, yay topper:) Hehehe I bore you the most about my m-seals, chalk powders, pastes etc..All I need is a super patient listener like u my friend!:)
Shruthi, thank you & thumba thank you!! If there's a shortage of m-seal in stores now, you'll know the reason ;-D
uptake, funny you mention it, I actually have an earnest neighbour who convinced me to tutor her starting this week (tamil new year's day & all that). wish me luck. I hope I don't make her regret or worse, lose interest in painting! :D and Guruni..not nice. A smarter name please! ;)
Agnes, thaaank you soooo much!!! :)
Shilpa, thank you!! Good luck, nothing is lost - do try and make it happen :)
Tan, that's really nice of you! I'm scared ppl will want to buy if I hold an exhibition. I'm possessive about my paintings :D Although if I do exhibit them, will definitely let you know my dear :)
A New Beginning, hahaha..I can just about manage to sew buttons so that they fit into the right button-hole ;-) Thank you for the innovative idea. I'll try it :):)
Indy, thanks for showering me with praises. I'm all smiles :-))
Mohan, Thank You!! Your comments always encourage me. I am praying BBMP hires me soon ;-)Pls let them know through your vast network.

Swaram, thank you kindly miss. For classes, read my reply to Mohan. Also pls pls shift back to Bangalore :-) I can learn cooking from you!!
Insignia, Thank you, specially for the reassurance. I guess only my eyes see the faults :)
vimmuuu, yup I added my sweat, blood & lots of 'a secret ingredient' to the paints ;-) Thank you!!! I honestly wouldn't go as far to say patience is my middle name. I wish I was though:)
p.s. click on the picture for a larger view.
Urmil Amol, keep those praises coming & you're sure to find me soaring high above our building tomorrow morning!! :-) thaaaankk you again and again - it means a lot to me!
lostworld
I was so captivated by the beauty of the ladies in the picture i never noticed the uneveness in the windows till you mentioned. My point is why tell those things. some times those are the things that may be adding additional beauty to the painting. I appreciate your work .
great painting
like the picture
The painting looks awesome. Worth all your "sweat"!!!....
And ofcourse, nice quote by Mr. Anonymous.
Awesome girl.....simply superb!!!!
As for the grill, when I saw the pic first I thot those grills were too tiresome to replicate and nowadays I'm sure there must be some tools to copy-paste them in some way and then u tell me it was all hardwork, every one of them;-o.
I'd love to learn but dunno if I have the patience;-P
So where the picture going to be placed in ur house??? or is it for sale????
Painting is very beautiful especailly the lady in blue color dressed looks very pretty. You have given full attention to very minute details.
You're really very talented. Thanks for the tips, but I couldn't make the head or tail of them... coz I'm no artist! :D Not even close :( And the painting... mashallah... what to say... STUNNING! And I didn't notice any imperfections in the windows. They look perfect enough for me! :D
I just cannot say...how much patience you have dear...Ahh I get annoyed even to put one kollam in the morning and here is my freind drawing murals..cool and keep it up..
Art and craft is beyond my understanding!!!!...just that I know it takes lots of effort...
chitra, I never looked at it that way. Thank you for the honest words:) :)
sm, thanks a lot!
nachu, you stole my words. The pleasure of seeing a completed painting is indescribable!:-)
Reflections, I think stencils are available now that you mention it. It didn't strike me to use one :-0
Thanks a lot Nancy. Right now it is wrapped & kept aside at home (no place to hang). Did consider selling but not sure whether they are that good also ;-)Plus I'm too possessive about them.
Chandrika Shubham, thank you so much :) I'm happy they turned out pretty. Wink!
Dhanya, absolutely floored with your compliments. Thankooo, thankoo very very much!!:-))
Subha, I think the patience in this case stems out of interest. If it makes you feel better, I put horrible kolams. All my own on-the-spot creations ;-D thank you with a big smile!!!
Wow!!! That's all I can say...
Awesome!! I enlarged the pic... and it's just beautiful. The intricate work of the windows, the expressions on the faces...damn cool!
Kudos to you...you are truly talented!

Deepa, is it?! :) thanks a lot, this means I need not say welcome!! Looking fwd to seeing you often :-))
Bikram, thanks for dropping by. I don't mean to preach but as you keep painting, one gets better. It doesn't happen overnight or b'cos of 1 good teacher even. Perserverance helps the most :)
gils, I know I mustn't have favourites, but the 4th lady happens to be mine too ;)
Arkansas Patti, thaaaank you!!!! :) I don't know what else to say :)

This is lovely :-) I am a total dud when it comes to drawing painting, but I'd love to give it a shot. My e-mail is chinkurlii@gmail.com.
Thanks!
So this is how you paint !!!! LOL !!!
Its fantastic and I my eyes with glasses cant find any difference in the grills of the windows. ;) Its fantastic - the whole effect of the pic is superb.
Is this painting embossed using M-seal or is it the outline only ??? I have tried this once - didnt come out well for me.
Its so beautiful !!! Where have you put it up in your home ????
Wow! This painting is awesome! I don't know if I will ever have the courage to try this painting, I will however keep checking out all the eye candy in your blog!

Maggie (Grandma Yellow Hair), I'm a huge fan of Ark. Patti. Any friend of hers is mine too :) I love your name & I read about who named you. Cute cute soo cute:-) Its great to have you here!!!!:-)) Thank U!!!
Chinkurli, that's the spirit. We all start off duds only ;-) Mailed you.
UmaS, I have full faith in the power of your 'new stylish and powerful' glasses so now finally I know for sure my window is perfecto!!;-) I've used m-seal only for the borders(not completely embossed). Probably the mseal you used had expired?! I haven't hung it yet - no place at home!!!:-)
Shankari, I'd love to see your work if ever you try it someday! :-) 'eye-candy'.. The 4 ladies say thank you ;-)
MindfulMeanderer, there you are at last!:):) I dunno about face, but the 3rd ladies smile is lopsided..couldn't do anything :-0 Oh & what was that - you will allow me to play with lil p? You , my friend have no clue that I happen to be a kid-magnet. You'll find it hard to separate LilP from me when we get together(really) !!!:-)
Uma, thanks for dropping by. You can outsource it to me(see I'm extra nice to ppl who are nice enough to comment on my posts). Cheers..and thanks!!!:-)
Thank you, for the kind words about me on Maggie's Blogazine. You were way too generous...I am no more special are wonderful than anyone else I just live using the abilities God gave me. Thank you, again you are very sweet.

Hey brilliant painting and some real good tiprs... cool!
Since I have not seen this in person and saw this only on this post, I would say I would pay Rs.4500. If you think it is less, please excuse me and quote what you think would be the right price. I hope I did not offend you.
karan a, thanks for visiting!:)
SG, 4500 ?? *faints* !!!!!:-)I didn't expect so much at all. Makes me feel like a professional even discussing high prices;-D If only you weren't in California, I may have considered :-(!! THANK YOU!!!!!!:-)You made my day.
