Dancing to her tunes

Sam (petname) , my youngest cousin sister spent a week with us & kept us all on our toes! She loves Pogo, music, junk food and all her cousin brothers - in that order. She's also a terror. I used to sleep beside her and all these kids get wild as midnight approaches. She sat on me, pinched, punched me encouraging my cousin brother to take a video of the same! I hope noone reading has a mental picture of me as a plump thing since honestly, I am not a well-endowed or a fleshy person who can endure all this. Bottomline is it hurt and I was sore! We also had a 'cold' fight one night. It was all started by the brat (thats her..any doubts?). She stealthily approached me from behind , told me to close my eyes and stand still. I was busy searching for something in my bag and obeyed. Immediately there were 2 ice-cubes in my hand & high-pitched giggles. That was it. I  aimed at her stomach. So the ice-cubes went back & forth for a few minutes when I took our game to the next level. I slid one of them inside her t-shirt! You should've seen her dance!! ;-) She was tugging my t-shirt to take sweet revenge but thank God I happen to be taller than her (atleast now). This was late at night and her mom was the not-so-amused spectator so we had to put an end..also the ice cubes melted!

I made the mistake of playing her favourite song on my laptop once. So everytime I took out the laptop, she'd beg me to play songs for her on youtube. Here's her pick. Mostly tamil songs so non-tamilians, please excuse and I hope you read on to savour the spirit of the post(they say music is a universal language) ;-)

*Vaaranam Aayiram - Ava Enna
This is her favourite! I used to play this atleast 5-6 times daily on an average. I can now sing the entire song backwards people. If I watch it two more times, I can even dance like Surya (I think). On most days I used to be addressed in this fashion - 'anjaley pode' !!! Huh!!

* Subramaniapuram - Kangal Irandal
So after watching the above song 15 times, I made a deal with her & told her we'll also watch my favourites once in a while. We both liked this song. She liked the last few seconds specially since the hero falls into a ditch while cycling & eyeing the heroine ;-D

*Pokkiri - Dole dole than
She watches this song wide-eyed  everytime in total fascination. As for me, I like this song in Telugu better ;-)

* Hippo & the Dog - The lion sleeps tonight
I had had enough of film songs & distracted her with this very cute song.It was entertaining as she would imitate the dog's dance.

* Aayirathil Oruvan - adho andha paravai pola (remix)
This was our unanimous favourite!! I loved this song just for the way Reema Sen moves. Ooh la la! Both Sam & I used to also err..try to dance like her. My uncle played this song in hi-fi speakers with bass/base et al and the effect was phenomenal.

Speaking of tamil songs and dance takes me back in time to one office party. A bunch of them got together and sang some popular songs in their mother tongue (HIndi). This spurred a few tamilians to sing 'vaseegara' (Minnaley). Then Mals sang, Bengalis sang and it was competition. It soon became a mandatory one. Whenever song-dance related events happen, I hide in a corner. After majority of the people sang, the embarrassment began for talentless folks like you guessed right! I was left to myself for sometime. Soon everyone had sung except me (tamilian that is). So I was asked to be a sport and whatnot. I relented but not without fervently praying for the earth to swallow me whole. Thank God noone recorded my err.. 'mellifluous' voice!! It would've sounded like nails scratching the blackboard. Ok I won't drag it further.. I sang facing a crowd of about 50 for the first time in my life, not solo but with another teammate who obliged when I pleaded in desperation.  Result - There's a picture of myself in a pose a la Avril Lavigne-wannabe while belting out 'kuchi kuchi rakkama' (bombay)!!!!! Not a very flattering debut to say the least.

There's also a video of me dancing in broad daylight. On our way back from Wayanad, one of my friends N had this idea. We played 'kannum kannum' (Anniyan) on one of the car stereos and danced..in a corner of the road on the Western ghats. The whole thing was recorded too! My friends didn't drink by the way. Several cars and buses passing by thought there was a movie shoot going on. I was playing/dancing with my colleague's 2 year old son who was enjoying the song! Whenever I am low I just have to play that video. I invariably start smiling wide at everyone's antics. At the end  there's a sequence where everyone walks towards the camera one by one. That's my favourite as there are females doing catwalk, my friends' husband making monkey faces, 2 others scurrying back and forth like rats and one guy doing hip-hop !!! Spontaneity :-) The kid & I appear at the end together and look far too respectable in comparison to the others.

Well, as usual, I started off with something & ended up at the other end of memory lane. Heee ;-) Typical goofy me! Here's a picture taken at Chembra peak in Wayanad, Kerala.

lol. Reminds me of my engg. 1st year :) Hostel/ragging et. all meant plenty of such situations. Being "talentless" in a group could be sometimes fun thou'. At least when you don't take yourself seriously - self deprecation is always fun :-)

Heehee! :D

What's with everyone blogging about kids?!
Swaram, Hitchy and you! :D

And I like your cousin! :P
And the pokiri song, even I liked it in telugu only!

lostworld said...

Swaram, you'll hear 'kuchi kuchi rakkamma' from me next only when there's a gun pointed to my head ;)Its ok to be a clown just once!!;-D

Chatterbox, Kerala is sooo vividly green its hard to describe in words & do justice to the natural beauty!! Its one of my favourite places at any given time :)Perfect for picnics, holidays, relaxing ..you name it!;-)

Shilpa Garg, thank you for reading:) I had so much I am missing her sorely now!!! :-(

Insignia, Yeahhh I am missing her, hence the post:-( Oh I said "If I watch it anymore" then I can dance :-D Making me dance isn't that easy. I agree with U- RS makes optimal use of her assets!!;-)

karan a, yes this is the advantage of blogging ;-)I need not stop until I am officially bored. Heeee :-)and thank you!!

gils, excooos-me?!??! Didn't you read words like "embarrassing"
, "talentless", "nails scratching on blackboard" in this post!! Are you reading between the lines & mocking my croaking voice? :-)Honestly I don't have an audio (Thank God)!!:-) I agree I am no less but Sam doesn't take after me! But the training is ongoing. In time one of us will get influenced by the other ;-D

Urmil Amol, thanksss, I feel less of a blabbermouth now!! I'll show you the dancing video sometime ,be prepared though :-D Thank You. I took that pic. I was afraid to mention & decided to wait to see if it merits lil appreciation!;-)

Shilpa, I love that hippo - adorable!!:-)) I don't dare sing fearing that I'll probably damage my own eardrums!Heehaaaha ;-D j/k.

Hari, exactly my friend!! You know, I think exactly like that. Whenever I am making a tomfoolery of myself, I try to laugh along with everyone. It helps tremendously & is no longer embarrassing or shameful!! :-))

Agnes, thanks!!:)There are specific reasons why I won't post that video here. You can take a wild guess why ;-)

nivedithasperceptions, We love kids what to do :-))Pokkiri song in Telugu is much better all thanks to one Mr. Mahesh Babu. I'm sure you'll agree ;-)

Sriram, LoL..Rukkumani is a nice choice. My brother also used to like this song a lot!! :-)

Samvedna, actually tamil happens to be my mother tongue.. heehee ;-D

nachu, oh you should hear the rest of her list. All 'dappankkuthu' songs are her instant favourites!

gils, now lets shake on that!!! Calling me desi avril is enough to get me to do 2-3 cartwheels ;-)*eeeeeeee*

Shruthi, wokhayyy we'll dance together. Rock-amma needs a partner like U anyway!;-D Rest of the songs are lesser known tamil songs actually.

Arkansas Patti, Hahaha..U won't believe but a college friend used to call me wmd. But that was b'cos I was famous for cracking PJs(poor and pathetic jokes) at the drop of a hat;-D So, I'm always open for a duet with U.

uptake, You are just toooo much!!!! :-)))) Whattay video. Now this is one dance I can claim to do with utmost confidence!!! 3 'bleats' for you!! ;-)

A New Beginning, Thanks!!! :-))She's cute once you overcome the initial fear.

You must have had a wonderful time with your cousins.

I unconsciously hum "kangal irandal" several times a day.

Vaseegara is my all time favorite. By the way, Bombay Jayashree is coming to the San Francisco Bay Area for a carnatic performance on June 12. We will be attending that.

your post reminded me of my cute little cousin sis.. she would make me play songs from Lion King, Aladdin etc in a loop. After listening to each of the songs 10-15 times in a row, you can imagine my situation. Wayanad pic is awesome girl. I had been there just a month back.

Anonymous said...

All good songs, cant blame the lill one especially the hippo and the dog !! :D :D

Dont underestimate your voice; it wouldnt be that bad, would it? Ok, heres and idea, record one of your song and send it to me, I shall upload it in V-mphony. What say ? :D :D :D

and btw, do you have that smile inducing video ? in youtube or something? Its been a while since I smiled ! :D

lostworld said...

Vintage Obsession,;-) Tamil songs maintain the tempo throughout! Many are high energy, but with time they become highly irritating too ;-D

SG, Vaseegara is 1 song I guess everyone likes or liked when it came out!:):) Enjoy the Bombay Jayshree concert. I like Carnatic music but don't have too much knowledge on it.

evanescentthoughts, yeah I know precisely what your 'haalat' would've been !! Heee;-D I also know you went to Wayanad & I was waiting for a post but alas..

vimmuuu, Here's the thing-Next time I come to Chennai, lets meet in Marina beach & I'll sing live for u. I can assure you the beach will be empty in 2 minutes :-)I don't even put up my photos here, you think my videos will be on youtube?:-)Someday I'll surely show you the video. That's a promise, but not through public sites. But we have to get u smiling again..with or without my video!!
