.. was my High school Math teacher known as Lakshmi Ma`am or Narasimhan Ma`am.
I studied in 5 different schools in total and never met another like her. When I was taking the entrance exam in the final school # 5, Mrs. A was the supervisor. I found the paper a little too easy (well, the reason behind that is a private joke and another story). OK, so I got my admit and joined Class 8. Mrs. A taught Math and she was dreaded by one and all. When you take a look at her, you wouldn't imagine the reason. She was short, old and very frail. Spoke very slowly and she had severe coughing fits in classes whilst speaking. Why was she a terror? Reason 1 - 90 % of the class sucked at Math and so naturally hated it. Mrs. A could be a teddy bear and she would still be hated. Reason 2 - She ensured no one got out of her classes alive. The challenges she used to put us through left us in trauma specially when exams were round the corner.
Me. I fell in the 90 % category alright. My favorite subjects in school used to be English and Chemistry. Mrs. A it seemed was quite impressed with my Math score in the entrance exam. So she presumed the new girl was an ace at Math. The first term tests results proved how wrong she was. I still remember my abysmal score. I got a measly 15 on 35 !! When in school, I was a nerd. On a scale of 10, I was a 13 :-P Always studying , making notes and comparing marks (!!) :-) You get the drift -- My world came to an end literally. Mrs. A didn't make my life easier. She rubbed salt on my raw wound by mentioning in class how I failed to live up to her expectations. At home, I witnessed extreme reactions. My dad is very very good at Math and he simply couldn't believe what a dunce I was. My mom didn't bother too much. I decided to pull up my socks on my own. I recall topping the class the very next test. I won't mention the score , you see I don't want to show-off and all that ;-) That was a turning point of sorts. Math became my favorite subject gradually. It was hard-work and I did relapse several times but I knew how to motivate myself to get back on track. Mrs. A of course had a humongous role to play. She knew every student , every parent and also knew how best to instill a sense of discipline in each one. I began to enjoy her classes and wait eagerly for the toughest of the toughest papers ! Oh, I didn't become her favourite or the Math Pundit of the class but I made drastic improvements. She was the only teacher I know to this day who never had a favourite student (at least she never revealed it)
During our 9th & 10th, I developed a fascination for Trigonometry. To this day, it remains the branch of Math I liked the most. During our Board Exam preparations, Mrs. A grilled us till our brains were dripping with formulas and fundas. Early morning special classes, late night assignments, endless pep-talk and scary images of failing even :-D She was very very ill during this time but she wouldn't miss a single day. There was no necessity for her to teach us , I guess it was simply her iron will. I recall she was once thoroughly pissed with our class as we had all submitted a poor assignment. She made us shut our books that day and involved us in a discussion. She asked each one of us what our ambition in life was. People blabbered the usual rubbish and she saw through all our rhetorical answers :-)
The 'life-changing' CBSE Board Exams began. Our exams were held in another school. For Math, she proved what it took to be a teacher. She made it a point to sit with each one of us post-exam and discuss the paper to gauge how well each one had performed. I hated these sessions as I don't elaborately delve into a written paper. Who wants to be reminded of all the horrible mistakes one had obviously committed! But Mrs. A left us no choice. I came out beaming only to have her point out some grossly silly mistake I made in Taxation. It was the only area where I lost marks. Mrs. A did this exercise with everyone and since she knew each one's capability, she surprisingly even knew where each one would have inevitably screwed up !!
When the results were announced, she was in school even before us waiting to congratulate us. She had obtained the detailed marks list through some sources. Even post-school, for any important advice she was the first one I called. I wasn't the only one. Scores of students looked up to her. The day she passed away was the day before my first day of Engineering college. Such a sad day. Her house was filled with all the students she had taught and mesmerized. But Math never left me. It remained my favourite subject and a cakewalk throughout College & Engineering. Sadly, I have never ever scored a 100 but always swam in the various ends of the 90's (so-near-yet-so-far syndrome). I always jinxed it with a trademark crazy and highly unimaginable mistake.
Of all the teachers I have had, a select few have left an indelible mark on me. Mrs. A was definitely top of the tops!

Truly such teachers are hard to find..Dedicated souls..It remains me my math teacher sylvia at school..
Hats off to such teachers .
Teachers always leave a great impression whether it is good or bad! If you like a teacher, they will be your favorite, they will still be favorite if you don't like - since you pick such teachers the most for pun :)
You know what? your post made me remember all those girls in my school and college days where in they used to mug up the steps to solve a problem! Even if they miss a single step, the end proof or answer will always be correct (goofed up one :D). That is where they used to miss those 'So near yet so far' marks! I don't mean to say all girls mug up things... but most of them used to and hence they were struggling a lot to score centum :)
That's so very nice that a teacher made a such a great impact/impression on you and you had the joy and pleasure of learning from her.
May she rest in peace!
Wonderful tribute to a caring and very special teacher. We basically remember only the very good and the very bad teachers.
I think there is a Mrs. A in everyones life. Too bad we don't always get to let them know. Well done.
Wow.. that was great girl.. this post gave some insights into you :P Maths was where I usually topped and had once scored a 100 :D she must be really an awesome teacher!
A very written and a moving post!!Good Teachers touch and turn so many lives knowingly or unknowingly...Thats why its called the noble profession...one of my uncles, who is a doctor, never charges any of the ppl who belong to this teaching profession as a tribute to it...
5 schools haan :).. i know how that feels.but its exciting isn't it?? maths was my fav sub too.. n no matter how old u grow, ur first teachers will always be remembered. nice post. brought back fond memories of my teachers.

Well written Math Pundit :)
Sonal - Thanks !! I had to fight off the temptation to put up my marks here..very badly! my math teacher was a gem.
Shobha - So true. We used to be in awe of her. She was simply superb. Exemplary!
Mohan - hee hee hee.. that made me laugh a lot. I would be lying if I said I never mugged up stuff in school, but certainly not in Math. I hated Comp Sci and used to mug up the programs, right down to the semi-colon in C language :D
Shilpa Garg - True, I was fortunate. When my brother reached high school, she was really ill & couldn't handle the class.
Arkansas Patti - Thanks Patti! You never said a truer word. " I think there is a Mrs. A in everyones life " - I so agree!
Avada Kedavra - Thanks a lot. Oh yeah, she was a genius. Although we were terrified, we learnt not just Math but also a whole lot of life's lessons from her.
Urmil Amol - Thank you! You must be so proud of your uncle. That's an equally noble thing to do.
Shruti - Yes 5 schools - I loved it. Made tons of friends. To this day, thats the reason why I make friends very fast.
- Thanks so much.
Swaram - She always went out of her way to do things for us. And effortlessly, that's what made her so unique! ..err..math pundit?! not quite sure.. :)
Best tribute you can pay off to your teacher!
I felt goose bumps while reading certain lines! Damn touching girl!!
So you are a math Tigress eh?! Wow!!
A math teacher who made a difference....Such a heart warming tale :)
Psst: You should send her a print out of this post on the next teacher's day...She will be thrilled and will finally realize who her favourite student is! :)
a selfless lady she is. and what a wonderful tribute you have paid her.
I think all of us have had one such great teacher in our lives (and is it a coincidence that its always been a Math teacher?) :)
Shruti - thank you very very much.
ah not a tigress, a lil lamb ;) but at times, I wish I majored in Math.
Choco - I caught you! You haven't read my entire post. Haan ya Na !! :D My teacher passed away my friend, how I wish I could do what you've said..
Shruthi - Thanks !! Strange really, maybe Math teachers are made of awe-inspiring stuff .. :)
Hey baby i was filled with tears while reading your post coz all the old memories came back to me and i realise that narsimhan mam was really awesome@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! she dedicated her life to us during out 10th,... its truly overwhelming... we were very lucky to have her.. i remember those lecture sessions she had with us every morning 7.30 ... had it not been for her maybe i wouldn have got the % i got in 10th ... she was truly inspiring... hats off to her.. sadly she is no more !!
A very touching post. It is so important to have teachers like Mrs. A. Their service mentality is what makes good students become good citizens and do well in life. I wish I was taught by someone like Mrs. A who could help me shape my future... BTW, I was a dunce in math too :p
Arrrgh!!!! **Blushes**
Nah re...Did read your post..But have this bad habit of not commenting as soon as I read something...**stupid stupid**
"Lost world" is thinking **excuses excuses** :)
Ussha - Same sentiments here!! Ditto. She was like no other. Most of us did well all thanks to her. Her early morning lectures I would never forget..always dripping with disdain & sarcasm at our stupidity. I used to be really scared of her in 8th, later it transformed into sheer admiration. She was truly an amazing woman. :-(
Vidya - Heylo! After a long time. Yeah, Mrs. A set out about her mission with a zeal like no other. She was remarkable. Without her, I would have remained a dunce sans doute (that's without doubt) !!!!
Subhash81 - Welcome to my blog! Thank you so much. Really touched you dropped a comment. What're you upto these days? I remember your batch was passing out the year I joined.
Choco - & you thought you could fool me !!! :D hehe.. no excuses required .. I understand & you made me laugh. Enjoy your break. Glad you read it.
ok.. I'm the 4th Shruti commenting on this page :P
Such teachers so exist! Wow! :) I thought I had the best teachers. I too had teachers who'd come to our centre and wish us luck before the exams. But that's about it.
Mrs. A seems to have been such a pure and committed teacher :)
I'm glad u had a teacher like tht...u knw I cant point out any one teacher who made a difference to my life & I've often felt quite sad abt it:-(.
Every time the kids start a new year I fervently pray tht they get a good teacher:-)).
Shruthi - So I noticed. I seem to attract all Shruthis .. ;)
It took me also a while to realize that Mrs. A was definitely not an ordinary, just another teacher.
Reflections - Oh that's really sad Nancy :( I sure wish both your girls run into loads of teachers who not simply teach but inspire as well. If all else fails, they have YOU! No I'm not joking :)
