Flight of the cockroach

*Warning : Certainly not for the faint-hearted*

Unless and until you have a peculiar affinity for cockroaches (in which case let me confess I'd be really afraid of you), you are NOT going to like this. So the hero of my story is a cockroach. Had it been a kitten, I would have given it some thought and come up with a sweet name. But a cockroach - I'm sorry, I prefer to call it a 'sewage-lover', 'drain-habiter', 'toerag', 'menace' and other such pleasantries. In case you have other challenging synonyms , lets play a game. The blogger who coins the most disgusting and dirtiest name ever wins an award ( You can pick any from the right side of my page )!!!

It was half past midnight and I woke up feeling extremely thirsty. After having a glass of water, I crawled back into bed and minutes later, I hear 'Zzz' ! I couldn't sleep with the incessant Zzz-ing in my ears. I contemplated switching on the lights as the decibel levels of the 'Zzz' was not as low as that of a normal house-fly. I'm not an expert, I tried to use common sense best suited for that late at night. I put on the lights and I SAW IT! A HUGE COCKROACH FLYING in my room. I loathe cockroaches and detest them crawling around. Flying cockroaches simply churned the dinner in my stomach. I deserve a pat(s) on my back here - I did NOT run out of the room screaming! I did NOT scare my tired parents who were sleeping! But I'll admit I really missed my brother. I might have shaken him awake had he been home. We've chased squirrels, rats together in the past so a cockroach would have been .. child's play! I am only TERRIFIED (totally) of lizards. Others, I can tackle with some company. No such luck. It was 1 a.m. and I was alone in my zombie-like state. Cockroach seemed least bothered. I stood rooted to my spot, scratching my head and watching the cockroach circling my room. I started feeling dizzy watching the demented scum flying around in circles doggedly.

My plan of action (after 10 minutes of pondering) was this - Shut my room & go sleep in the living room. I mean, had it been scurrying around on the floor, I would've attempted murder. What could I do to a soaring roach? As I was taking my blanket, the cockroach felt neglected (I guess) and all of a sudden crash-landed on the edge of my cot. Damn !! MY BED... was all I thought. This called for WAR , in no uncertain terms. I shut the door & this time remained in my room. Grabbed a newspaper and tried to push it to the floor. The darn cockroach crawled fast on the edge of my cot. Simply too fast for me. I pulled off the mattress, pillow, bed covers and everything else on the bed along with it. After all that effort ... It simply took off again! I was wide awake now and absolutely disgruntled. I wanted to shoot it dead. I quickly ran to the other end and opened the door to the veranda leading out of my bedroom. I fervently prayed that it would fly out and restore the little peace which was there in my life. Again, it landed on my cot. It was apparent the cockroach enjoyed this whole take-off and land tussle. This time, the Gods showed some mercy and I managed to push it down to the floor with my newspaper. The brainless cockroach , for the first time displayed signs of smartness and scuttled away into the open veranda. I shut the door immediately. I contemplated sleeping in the living room in any case. Problem was I wasn't sleepy at all :-( I watched TV till 3 a.m. in the morning - 'Ladder 49' was coming on HBO !!! I did go to office the next day, a braver woman. Normally I am every bit a damsel in distress when it comes to pests and rodents, do not mistake such one time occurrences for the regular me :-P I'm sure there was something mixed in my dinner which resulted in my bold behaviour that night. But you can nominate me for bravery awards ?!?!!! Please do. Oho, Pretty Please !!!!!!!!

loved the part where you ripped apart your room ( blankets , bed sheets , pillows ... ) just to handle ONE cockroach !!
As far as i am concerned the bravery award goes to the cockroach for being able to handle a hyperventilating sleep deprived female !! :-))

Flying cockroaches, that too in the midnight! wah wah... you are definitely carry some bad karma from your previous incarnation :D

Don't be so worrying about it. All you need is a packet of 'Boric Acid' powder that costs about Rs 25/-. Mix it up with some maida/wheat flour in equal proportions with water and make tiny balls of this mixture. Place these all over your house where you expect these rodents to roam around. In less than a week, your house will be 100% cockroaches free! All the cockroaches will die and the new ones wont return for next 1 year for sure!

You may not know that Cockroaches are the only living organisms which can survive a nuclear bomb mishap! So, I call it an 'Immortal Armageddon'
Happy revenge time

Nice post. On a serious note, it is better to get rid of cockroaches through extermination efforts. Cockroaches are so dangerous, they are the only living being who will survive a nuclear war. They are more radiation proof then humans.

flying cockroaches scare the hell out of me.. and then, with my yelling, I scare everyone else at home.
U know, in case of cockroaches, there is one thing that's more effective than praying- Spraying!

Neo - Why yes, you are! I felt like the female who comes in Ratatouille (remember the beginning) and brings her house down when she spots the 2 rats. I think I deserve the award simply b'cos I handled it alone :-P

Swaram - You've gotta be more agile! Black cat?? That's more dangerous. Its simply gotta be funny too. Write about it pls. Can't wait.

Bala - Thanks a lot!!! 'Brown Bugger' is a very good one. Thumbs Up.

Shruti - I don't know why it never struck me. HIT was even there at home. It occured to me the next morning. Well, 1 a.m.-did the best I could!

Mohan - Hee hee.. I have enough karma for this janam only, don't include all my previous janam sins ;-) Thank you for the suggestion. We did make our house cockroach-proof after this incident. This happened 3-4 months back. After that I haven't spotted any more..keeping fingers crossed & HIT by my side.
- Yes I knew cockroaches survive nuclear attacks. Also saw it recently in the movie 'Wall-E'. Great name for the pest Mohan!!

SG - Thanks! You're right. We did that. Didn't really want any more sleepless nights :-) "They are more radiation proof then humans." - LOL, so it seems. Unfair but true.

Shruti - I just forgot that I could spray and be done with the cockroach!!! I can be a tubelight at times really. Not one of my proudest moments.

evanescentthoughts - God! I'm Scorpio too. Ah bad joke I know ;-) Let me read what you did to scorpions! Dangerous woman.

Urmil Amol - With a comment like that, you simply made my day!!!! :-)I'm in cloud 99. I don't know about writing a book, not very sure whether people will spend hard-earned money to read about flying bats & cockroaches :D But on a serious note..I will work on it. Oh you nominated me for THE bravery award??? Yippeee! Can't wait! ;-)

gils - Reading your comment makes me feel so brave!! Call me next time cockroaches trouble you! Oh and Thanks a lot. Warm welcome to my page :-)

PP(Sreejith) - Thaaaank You! What a thought. It might be on these lines - "I was practising my flight for the annual Olympics when this human monster spoilt my routine; I ended up losing my gold medal to the butterfly" :-)I must stop watching so many animated movies!

sonal - Thanks a lot dear!! But wait a minute.. How could you?? Bravery award to the cockroach?!!?? After patting me and telling me I rock! Decide - Cockroach or me? :-)

Only if i get a treat at Little italy next .. Yes ofcourse it's u :).. who care abot the brown gross thing ..

Shruthi said...

Muck-dweller, six-legged flutterer, dungwinged ogre
– as of now can only come with these three names.. will comment if I think something better ;)

and you deserve a pat and an award for pulling your room down heheh .. I can imagine the winged monster fluttering all around the place. We had an animal attack too, last week. It was a rat! *snort* ..it lived in our pooja room for a day having a blast there. There was oil, some rice and flowers. It was twice the size when we finally managed to trap it. Phew.. very taxing days those were :P

You have my vote for a bravery award. I can't stand the buggers and a flying one is just too much.
Had I been you, I would have just moved out right then, leaving my forwarding address with my parents. They could call me when it was all over.
Hope the bravery award is nice and shiny.

Aryan-Arjun said...

Brave women take mine and Aryan's vote....if he seeing crockroach..he runs behind it to catch it....

Yes indeed, damsel in distress...my dear..

Arkansas Patti - Thank YOU so much! I knew I could rely on you to stand by me!!! ;) Oh & I do feel brave after reading your plans..

Aryan's mom - Oh wow. I'm sure there aren't any cockroaches in your house thanks to Aryan. What a gem of a kid!

I read the 1st line & just stopped....I've always been terrified of cockroaches....I detest them....I'm even scared to kill them:-((

But I'll relate to u something which happened to my sister 2 years back. She was driving somewhere when she noticed a huge roach on her rearview mirror. She was terrified...she cdnt leave the car in the middle of the road nor cd she drive fast as she was stuck in the traffic jam. It took her 15 mins to reach the side of the road to park & she swears it was the longest 15 mins she ever went thru in her life.
She parked it on the roadside, went home in an auto & sent her husband to pick it up when he came back from work in the evening.
Curiously until this incident I never knew even she was so scared coz she was always the braver of the 2 of us....and I always hid behind her when I sighted the damned bug.

After tht incident for the longest time I used to thoroughly scan the insides of any car b4 getting in;-D

Vidya said...

Superb post... :D
I could very well imagine you running behind the cockroach...

Although I am not scared of those aweful creatures... I still loath them...first thing i do when i see a cockroach is to kill it... :P

lostworld said...

Shruti - That's even better than the bravery award !!! Thank You so much :)

Vasudha.dilip - Welcome here. Thanks!!

Reflections - I missed you! Lovely to see your comment. OMG! What an incident. Thanks for sharing it Nancy. Well, I think she was brave alright. In the middle of traffic is nerve-wracking! I shudder of think of what I would've done. Let me scare you more, do check for rats too during your regular scanning! ;-)

Vidya - THANK YOU !!! Ya imagine chasing it at midnight. I hope it never happens again. Atleast this time I would use HIT :-)
