Some recent happenings in my life revoked these memories. Funny how things always seem easier and amusing (just a blog-post or a dinner table anecdote) once we are out of the situation. But when we are bang in the middle of a sticky situation, life is bleak with a blank future! OK I know I exaggerate :-P
This incident took place when I was in school. High school - Std 8 probably. We had one of those Second-term, Third-term exams - regular stuff going on. My brother and I used to go to school by auto-rickshaw. On that day, I don't remember the reason, but there were rumors of a Bandh (strike/protest). There were speculations that schools might be closed. Since there was nothing concrete reported in the daily newspaper or by the Local news channels, we were packed off to school. It was the last exam and there was already a post-exam plan in place. On the way to school, at a petrol-bunk, we were told that schools are closed. We were at that moment right outside the school gate. My friends and I had decided that even if the exam is postponed, we would meet in one of the houses and have a ball. So I instructed my brother to inform my mother, jumped out of the auto and ran towards the school gate without a second thought. (My friend S stayed within the school premises). Soon enough, our other friend U also joined us. S's parents were off to work and her younger brother Sr was at home. It struck me then that I could've dragged my brother along too. The more the merrier. Nevertheless, the 4 of us had a classic time - Running up and down her terrace, playing board games, gossiping and laughing over the silliest of things. Literally not a care in the world !
We had lunch and spent sometime idle. Towards afternoon, other kids in the colony were playing cricket and we enthusiastically joined in. Sr brought out his bat and although the three of us (the girls) didn't know to play real cricket, we were inducted in the team. We were a huge gang and of course, playing our own versions of cricket. One of them was both a left and right handed bats-woman decided in a split second according to the approaching ball. No Wide calls here , you see !! ;-) When I was 'batting', the unexpected happened. I swear this is not a made up story to attract your smiles. I lifted the bat and attempted some sort of an impromptu shot wherein the ball flew high , right above my head ( Sort of like how Shahid Afridi plays usually ) ... but wait a minute, only the handle of the bat was in my hand! The rest of the bat was also flying in the air; Half of the fielders had their eyes transfixed on the ball and were positioning themselves to take a catch while the other half was avoiding the flying bat !! :-) I was amazed at my physical prowess when Sr revealed that the bat had had a crack earlier. After this, everyone who used that bat made it a point to hit shots only so that both bat and ball would be air bound. It was comical I tell you. You had to see us to believe it.
Just like all good things come to an end, even this happy day was fast approaching its end. Little did I know that my mom was frantic with worry. My brother (the messenger) had relayed a garbled version of my instructions and she was expecting me home right after lunch. My friend didn't have a phone & so my mom couldn't reach me. So what does my mother do? She calls up school, finds out my friend's address from the school office and lands up at her doorstep with my brother in tow. This is no joke !!! Obviously she was no angel then, she looked like she would gobble me up alive in one shot. My friends didn't want to face her wrath and disappeared inside the house. I went home morose and downcast with my mom yelling all the way. Unpleasant !
Mothers. I have used so many Re.1 coins calling her from all the local booths in town ! So much so that my friends nicknamed my mom as my personal GPS. I'd feel a void too if I didn't get her customary " Hello C, enge irrukke, ( where are you? ), eppo varuve ( when'll you be home ? ) " !! But I was (still am) a mean kid. I'd be highly irritated ( in the middle of a useless movie or sitting in my office bus gossiping or merely for the heck of it ) and give her these curt answers. Anyway, moms being moms never give up. What do you know , I might've inherited her very genes. I already do the same to people whom I am close to. I pity my kid !! Although I have vowed never to land up at their friends` doorsteps. Not a chance.

Hey Rohi ...
Lovely post .. and really nicely written . The bat flew in the air.. and i was thinking that it hit u on ur head while reading .. Tom and jerry types.. he he.. Thank god .. nothing happened like that :)
and i too pity ur kids ..:P
Am sure your mom keeps a tracking device hidden in your baggage !! ... Plus am only too aware of the number of frantic calls strategically done to find your location and to catch that occasional lie !!...
Cant believe that you survived all these years with that constant surveillance !!
Wow girl! I luv these incidents of urs :) Takes me bk to those days :)
Njoyed reading this :)
Strict Moms - universal :D
LOL @ u pitying ur kid already :P
Of course mom's are always moms, no matter how old their kids are! As long as you come back by committed time or communicated new time, they will be fine. The moment you forget to inform change in the plan, you can be sure of a call from the other end!
At least the days have changed now with mobiles. One thing I still follow religiously - never miss a call from home! May it be from my mom or wife... there are some ground rules to be followed you see :D
Gosh I thot tht bat was going to fall onto somebody's head.
I knw exactly wht kind of expression cd be found on ur mother's face tht day....ur mother & mine shd form a club;-/
I still remember how we were always supposed to be home before the lights were switched on & if we were late she wd be standing at the door with her hand behind her back which ofcourse was holding a stick;-D
Mothers I tell you... but it isnt always their fault... I remember the good old no-mobile phone days... 9th standard and the son takes off to Goa for a week and returns after three... I never spoke to my mom in the interim and came back to a house that resembled a volcano...
But bats flying... tch tch...
haha.. same pinch.. same pinch.. my mom is ditto ditto same.. but I guess it's not their strictness.. it is just that they care for you sooo much that they want to know you are safe.. I used to yell at my mom for calling me in front of my friends (who would make fun of it) but later on realized why she did that.. Now I care for her so much that I start panicking if she doesnt pick the phone in the first ring :) good post girlie
Urmil - Thanks !!!! You know me only too well. Story of how my brother didn't get home once b'cos of me will be another blogpost..if I'm brave enough to publish ;)
sonal - Thank You!!! I guess I forgot to add that noone was injured during the many flights of the bat. Everyone seems to have surmised that the bat hit someone. Thank God that wasn't the case.
Neo - Damn! Did you have to mention in print that I lie? I was trying to portray myself as a paragon of truthfulness & honesty & purity all rolled into one!!! On hindsight, even I'm amazed with myself for having handled all that 'surveillance'.
Swaram - Thankooos!!! :) Glad to hear it takes you down memory lane. Also glad to note that strict moms like mine weren't a rarity.
Mohan - This is exactly how my mom gives her speeches & lectures. Ground rules and all that ;) I'm happy for you my friend - You seem to have mastered the art of understanding your wife's & mom's requirements. Your lucky wife!! :)
Reflections - Oops, I guess I conveniently forgot to mention that there were no casualties! You're so right, our moms can head such clubs & thrive in them, while we can plot stuff like how to escape from their clutches in the sidelines!
Peter Ferrao - Welcome to my blog!! You actually did that? I'm amazed. I bow before thee.. "house that resembled a volcano"..that sounds so familiar. In my case house turns into volcano with parents spitting fire like dragons even if I land up home at 10 one a rare weekday.
Avada Kedavra - Thanks babe!!! Oh no, don't rub it in with the emotional aspect. I start feeling guilty :) But yes, I do relate to it (in a minor way) as like you mentioned, I do it to my mom off late.
a flying bat! wish I was there. does your friend's brother still have it? and I remember those re.1 public telephone days! funny days..
as always this was a great post from you :) btw can I blogroll you? :)

I too remember when my Mom landed up when I was late from school-I promised I'll never do something similiar to my chidren-but now I am not sure :(
So u had a good time that day..
Hey mothers are always the paranoid kind...
Make website india
Shraddha - After a long time! How's the break? Thanks !!!
Hypermom - Hee hee.. Looks like all moms are made of similar stuff after all. I better enjoy myself till I turn into one ;)
workhard - Oh yeah total 'masti'. I don't know paranoid, but over-protective surely..
Thank God, you both made it home safely...
Although the last 2 para really brought a big laugh on my face... but I can certainly understand how worried your mom would have been seeing just your brother back...
Guess you have given her a hard time... no wonder, she still tracks you ... :P
Simply superb post... as usual...
Vidya - Thank YOU!!! I was absolutely morified when I read this line - 'Guess you have given her a hard time... no wonder, she still tracks you ... :P '. Come on, you've gotta be on my side!
I bet lostworld is'nt your givenname ;) Do share.. if it isnt too much of a privacy hassle :)
Nice post this one. Most of the "aam junta" would relate to most of incidents you described here :)
Hari, thank u !!! Oh,it isn't too hard to find my name. Usually someone in the comment section mentions it. But I don't use my good name as it is a little uncommon & yes,I like my privacy :)
:)
I conveniently remember the popular Shakespearean quote .. "What's in a name...." whenever someone evades a direct answer :)) lostworld is just fine..:))
