By now most readers would fervently hope (deriving conclusions from the title) that I put an end to this inane blog but I am gonna subject you to this torture for a few more years till I hang up my boots :-) Or if by a sudden twist of fate, I am stranded in an island without Internet! Then I'll be busy building sand-castles. Ok, back to the title. If you aren't a student anymore , then it would seem vague. Remember examination halls ? Supervisor ? A mental picture of you scribbling away the last few sentences / lines ? And then the dreaded " Stop writing ", " Hand over your papers now " , " Time's Up" !!
When I had exams, my entire house had exams. Period. I was the agitated, snappy, jumpy person during March-April every year. I had the jitters the morning of the exam and would drive everyone nuts. If something didn't go according to schedule, I'd be on the verge of a nervous breakdown. This would be after 2-3 revisions mind you. I was not a regular topper or such but I was a quintessential nerd. I feel bad for my parents ; they had the very definition of a problem child in me! Till my 12th, this was how every test/exam came and went. Once I joined my Engineering, the regular occurence of tests & exams mellowed me to a large extent. I slowly became nonplussed and nonchalant about exams and managed to do well even with my lackadaisical attitude. Throughout school, probably the only subjects I disliked were biology & sanskrit because I was horrible at both. We had Computer Science ( the prog. language 'C' ) as a subject in my first semester. Trust me, I even liked the most-hated subjects, Mechanical, Chemistry, Strength of Materials(SoM) etc but not C. I hated programming!!
When the first set of tests started, I was least prepared for C. On the day of the test, I thought otherwise. There were 4-5 simple questions and I pored over them for the whole 1 hour. The moment I stepped out of the classroom, my friend asked me what was the output I deduced for a certain program. I was stumped since I had not even seen that in the paper. It was one of those "Oh-No" moments in my life. I'd forgotten to turn over the paper & answer the remaining 2 questions :-( I threw my bag & ran inside to plead for a few more minutes. He refused & exclaimed that it was tantamount to cheating!! Well, I ended up with a 12 on 25 (or something like that). The second test was no better. I turned the paper on all sides and wrote all I could but didn't manage anything out of the ordinary to make up for the abysmal first performance. For the third & final test, the entire class pleaded with Prof to set an easy paper. It looked like everyone had goofed up the second one so I had some company there atleast! Our prof relented, showed some mercy & gave us a list of probable programs. Copying was never an option for me but memorizing was. To most girls, learning by-rote comes naturally. Don't ask me why. Its a God-given talent I think. I never 'mugged' usually but when the need of the hour is a good score, one mustn't question too much. I practised so hard I knew every program down to the last semi-colon and hash includes!! Our prof was quite a miserable creature teacher so it never even occured to me to figure out the logic behind each program on my own & learn the syntax (the easier option for the sensible ones). Thus armed, I was charged for the third test. I think I was just a tad extra-charged! You'll see what I mean. I finished the paper very quickly , handed it over & was super pleased I managed to salvage the situation just in time. Until the day of reckoning arrived. Everyone's 'blue book' (as it was called) was at my prof's desk save for mine. He called me aside & gave me an incredulous look as he handed me my bluebook. For a minute I thought it was perhaps because my programs seemed too good to be written by me. It wasn't so. I had very smartly written the program for binary search instead of bubble sort (which was what was asked). Ooops!! This is what happens when you learn by-rote & overlook important details like reading the entire question! Since there were no more tests to redeem myself, my prof gave me full marks for my program. Not before he questioned me for 30 minutes to make sure I knew the difference in the logic for both the programs (thankfully I was able to explain that)!!
After this, I never had another programming language till my 5th semester. This time it was C++. It was taught by my HoD (head of the dept) who managed to stir my curiosity. I learnt OOP concepts the right way and finally wrote all the programs on my own. Have to add it helped tremendously even later. I don't think anyone I know liked taking exams as much as I did. If I had my way, I'd be studying all my life. I used to enjoy the preparation phase so much. I would make elaborate time-tables and would get them approved by my mom who was certain I was out of my mind;-) I once wrote 2 tests on my birthday - Control Systems & Micro-processors. I managed to do both extremely well so I was ecstatic I had the 'birthday good luck'! However, in my final year the MBA entrance exam , CAT(common aptitude test) was also held on my birthday. More than all the preparation, I think I again banked on my good ol' birthday luck to bail me out. The joke was on me this time. I went in beaming only to come out nearly sobbing. Whether it was because the exam or birthday was ruined is an open question even now! Although when the results came out, it turned out I didn't do as bad as I'd imagined. But you know for CAT - if you don't score a 99+ percentile, it is as good as flunking !!
Funny how I have changed over the years. I have an exam (not a life-altering one) in less than a week and 3 books to study from. I have so far managed 60 pages from book 1 and I'm happily blogging about my pathetic situation. Books 2 & 3 might just remain untouched! No time-tables made at all. No question of revision here. But the excitement of giving an exam after so many months is undiminished. I shall ensure I read every question twice & turn the question paper twice-over (yup it isn't online).
**wish me luck :) there's little doubt I'm gonna need it with my history of bloopers!

Very good read Rohitha!!!!
Wishing u the very best!!!!!!
All the best :) Hope you ace it!
Ah, you had me scared with the title. So glad it was referring to testing.
I remember similar test results from my college days. Once, I got one question off on my answer sheet which was separate from the question sheet, so that all my answers from #50 on were wrong. Even when I proved I knew the subject matter cold, the grade stood.
Good luck and be sure to check both sides.
What an interesting post. I think this happens to almost all the students during exams. I can sense the same things what you have written in my neighbours house now.
Hope everything goes well for your exams. All the best.
All d best ro!!
I didnt kno abt d binary-bubble thing.....and to imagine u hv described d 'considerate' prof as "quite a miserable creature teacher"....!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

University exams during engineering days were a real nightmare...I have had numerous funny, memorable lab exams during my engineering...I had written about those in my blog long back titled The Unforgettable Lab Exams
And all the best for your Exams...Come out with flying colours :)
All the very best! Exam times are jittery with competition and onus on only academic performance. It was entirely opposite with me.
My parents felt I was studying more than required and would always make sure never touched books at home. :-S
Nevertheless, I was lazy as I grew up, and I must say I was lucky :-)
All the very best to you !!! Let the Lady Luck smile on you so that you have an easy to answer question paper !!!
If theres anything that I am so coool abt, then its the exams. I've actually made fun of many of my classmates, who eat up their nails in tension, all the time reading and reading.
And C and C++ are my favs and I did extremely well !!! Thinking abt those days - it was sure fun !!!
Wishing you all the best for your exams!

Wish you good luck hun! Your post reminded me of my school days. The annual exams would almost always begin on my birthday (3 March) and I would be mugging and panicking on my birthday. At least now I can celebrate it!!!
good luck
Bestttt of luck!!!! You'll do well!
You gave me a shock after reading the title and the first line, I really thought writing meant blogging. Good that it was not about that. Hmm exams.. I slightly differ from you in this aspect :) I used to hate them and prepare on the previous night :D But then most of the time I used to read more and understand everything that was taught in the college. A revision on the day before the exam was enough. I somehow could never byheart anything :( not even formulae! I remembered many formulae from their derivation! Nobody believes though.
Good luck with your exams Ro!! :)
All the very very very best!
The transition from a "nervous nerd" to "not-so-bothered normal student" is interesting.
And about me - i was never ever a nerd in life! :) :)
Good luck to you. You will be successful in this.
Some Control Systems questions:
1. What is Phase Margin?
2. What is Marginal Stability?
3. What is Absolute Stability?
4. Describe Routh-Hurwitz Criterion.
Tell me which Microprocessors you studied so I can ask questions.
And don't come back and ask me doubts in Control Systems. I don't remember a thing.
Good luck, sweety.
Tan, will read soon -thanks for link:) Shockingly I always got the easiest of easiest experiments for all my practicals;) Thank You!
Insignia,Thank U so much!!! In my case my parents thought I was 'reading' way too much but they could never control that. You see, I was always with a book-study material or a novel!:D
umsreflections, thaaaaank you very much!!!:-) I have encountered many like you who frighten nervous nerds like me..!! Cruella devil!;-)
Thank you Samvedna!!:)
gils, somehow I feel I never do justice when I respond to ur comments. Thank You for all the encouragement:)This is an assessment exam in french(not a major exam since my knowledge is v v ltd-hence didnt mention details) but maybe reading novels in french henceforth might be soo useful;-D
TDIC, Oh dear poor you!! I know exactly what it feels like..Thank God the celebrations are more peaceful now;-)..and thank you!!!!
Thank you sm!!!:)
Thanks a lot Dhanya!!!:)
evanescentthoughts, bana diya na ullu;) well, come engg. I stopped worrying. But I cannot claim that I used to pay attention always in class etc..Was definitely not such a good girl:D Thaank you. I hope I do decent!
$$, By now I know I was the ONLY one probably who treated exams as the beginning and end of everything..But yes, I'm glad the transition to normalcy eventually happened. Heee:D Thanks Shalini!!
Thank YOU SG!!!!:-))
uptake, Let me confess that my photo is deceiving which means I am not as young as I look which means I finished engg long back which means I am now in the twilight of my life which means I only know to "control" apetite, temper etc which means you should understand the 'MATLAB' I say!!:-)) Btw I studied mp 8085. Thank you for the wishes!!!!:-))
p.s. - If/When U re-visit my blog, let me know how to add my comment to your posts. I am unable to do so.
The more I read you, the more similarities I find between us! Damn fun!
And chill man! Not a life altering exam no? Goli maar!
And if you can, try cheating! I'm like at the top of my class during internals thanks to this art form. Of course I show my true colors in the finals! :(
Ohh my god..Looks like we both have the very basic nature..even i was the same during my school/college time..after 2/3 revisions also i used to feel i will not do better in exams..even today i dream of writting exams paper and i'm late by an hour ;-)
I didn't realize the problem of comments on that blog. Thank you for bringing it to my notice. I think I corrected it now.
A whole post on Exams!!?!!
Gal..What are you doing to me???? :|
Good to read that you have calmed down over the years. A sign of aging I tell ya..;)
PS: All the best for all your future ventures. :)
nivedithasperceptions, good to see u back really :)Frankly I never considered cheating as I was more afraid of the humiliation (if I got caught) but in this case, I might be the only 1 taking the test so there goes my only chance! heeeheee ;-D
maverickshree, thank goodness there's someone like me in this vast world!!:)Its better to just dream- I once misread the time on my watch & assumed I had an hour to go when I just had 20 mins (during the exam mind U);-D
uptake, you are welcome !!!:)
CG, hehehe.. the only advantage of growing old is that one can actually blame everything on age;) and thank you!!!:-)
ahh..exam blues..i can understand...But I am now you are going to rock with your cool attitude...Good luck Lostworld...
Aryan's Mom

Subha, oooooh the 'cool' attitude shines through in between all the nervousness does it?..thanksss!!! :-)
A New Beginning, thanks for the comment!! Exams were truly traumatic for me..atleast the few hrs before the paper was in my hands. After that I went about answering quite mechanically ;-D oh, welcome to my page !!
Please read my reply to your comments in my post. Thanks.

I can't address you as 'Lost World.' I believe you name is better that calling you 'Lost World.' I hope the exams went on well.
